Women's Basketball Hosts Norfolk State Saturday For Battle Of The Bay

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 15, 2024) – The Hampton University Lady Pirates basketball team returns home for the annual Battle of the Bay on Saturday, November 16 when they host Norfolk State at 5 pm. This will be a doubleheader as the men's teams will also play at 8 p.m.

Nathan Epstein and Kyan Nickelberry will have the broadcast on FloSports for both games.

THE SERIES
One of Hampton's longest-running series has the Lady Pirates holding a 59-38 advantage. Norfolk State has won the last two meetings, including last year's 59-45 win at the Convocation Center. Hampton last defeated Norfolk State on December 4, 2021, in a 56-52 victory at the Convocation Center.

Norfolk State was Hampton's first opponent 50 years ago on December 2, 1975, in a 66-39 Spartans win.

ABOUT HAMPTON
Hampton hits the home floor after a 65-55 loss on November 7 at Radford. CeCe Thomas scored 14 points and Jasha Clinton added 13 for Hampton but homestanding Radford went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the last minute to take the victory on Education Day.

Hampton (1-1) trimmed a fourth quarter deficit to one twice, with the last being at 49-48 after a Clinton three-point play with 6:13 left. Radford (1-1) answered with an 8-0 run to gain a nine-point advantage at 57-48 following a Makayla Firebaugh jumper with one minute left.

The Lady Pirates scored five straight points, four of those by Clinton to trim the deficit to 57-53 at the 1:25 mark following a Clinton corner jumper. That was as close as Hampton got down the stretch.

Through two games, Clinton leads the team in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game and 3.0 steals per game, while Thomas adds 10 points per game and 3.5 assists per game.

Hampton has four players averaging at least five rebounds per game with Jenae Dublin leading at 6.0 per game. Le'Asia Foreman is next at 5.5, while Aisha Dabo and Amyah Reaves add 5.0 rebounds per contest.

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE
The Spartans come across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel after splitting a pair of games on an SEC road trip. They defeated Missouri 57-54 on Sunday, then fell 68-58 at 22nd-ranked Alabama on Wednesday night.

Diamond Johnson leads NSU in scoring (18.5 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (2.25 spg). Kierra Wheeler is averaging 14 points and a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game, with Niya Fields averaging 11.3 points, 4.0 assists, and a team-high .516 from the field.
