HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 3, 2024) -- After winning two of three games in a recent homestand, Hampton takes to the road to face UNCW in a rematch. The Lady Pirates beat UNCW, 72-50, for their first win over the season. Following a close loss to Monmouth, Hampton bounced back to defeat Hofstra, 67-62.
Hampton fell to Charleston, 86-57, on Feb. 2. Camryn Hill set a career high with 30 points, more than half Hampton's total points. But injuries to Janae Dublin (9.9 ppg) and Malaka Cobb (2.2 ppg) forced both to miss the remainder of the game.
Although the Lady Pirates scored a season-high 72 points against the Seahawks, it was the Lady Pirate defense that was the key to victory.
Hampton's swarming defense forced 32 Seahawk turnovers, turning them into 36 points --- half Hampton's scoring total. In a 67-62 win over Hofstra on Jan. 28, Hampton forced 33 turnovers, good for 35 points.
Camryn Hill, who leads the Lady Pirates in 12 different offensive categories. Hill, the focal point of the team's offense, was recently nominated for the CAA Student-Athletic Academic Award. A Dean's List student, the senior will earn her bachelor's degree in Sports Management this spring.
But two other players have stepped up of late. After averaging just 5.8 ppg to start the season, Dublin was scoring at a 14.3 ppg clip over the last six contests.
Amyah Reaves averaged 4.3 ppg in the season's first eight games but upped her production to 13.3 ppg in the last eight games.
After juggling his line-up in the early season, Coach David Six settled on a stable starting five. The Lady Pirates employed 11 different starting line-ups in the first 13 games but have utilized the same starting five in each of the last four games (Janae Dublin, Camryn Hill, Le'Asia Foreman, Anyah Reaves and Cheyenne Talbot) with great results.
UNCW's Sammy Ackles scored 12 points in the first meeting with Hampton. Kylah Silver added 11 and Mary Ferrito came off thew bench to score 10. The Seahawks shot 26.7 percent from the field in the game, including 7.1 percent (1-14) in the fourth quarter.
UNCW's top scorer, Taylor Henderson, was limited to just seven points --- all from the free throw line in the first meeting with the Lady Pirates.
