Hampton Softball Gears Up for Mid-Week Matchup Against Rival Norfolk State

HAMPTON, Va. (March 18, 2024) … After winning its first Coastal Athletic Association Game of the 2024 campaign, Hampton softball returns to action against former MEAC foe Norfolk State. Last season The Lady Pirates split the series against the Spartans going 2-2. In the last 10 contests, HU has posted a record of 6-4. First pitch for Tuesday night's contest at the NSU softball field is set for 5:30 p.m.

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton is coming off a three-game series against the Hawks of Monmouth. While the Lady Pirates dropped game one, Coach Monique White's squad bounced back in game two defeating the Hawks 10-2. Carmynn Bonner had an impressive series for HU going 5-12 from the plate. Heading into this past weekend the Lady Pirates were still searching for its first home run of the season. The sophomore recorded six RBIs and her first home run of the 2024 campaign. Brooke Williams would also record her first home run of the season against Monmouth. Hampton's Taryn Bennett picked up her fourth win of her collegiate career.

The Lady Pirates continue to have success producing extra-base hits. HU currently ranks third in the CAA for triples (6) and fifth in the league for doubles (27). Both Bonner and sophomore Taylor Ivey have been crucial to Hampton's offense.  Bonner leads the team in batting average with a .314. Ivey is the second Lady Pirate this season to have a batting average over .300.

A Look at the Spartans

Norfolk State enters Tuesday night's contest with a 2-25 overall record are 1-2 in the MEAC. In their last time out the Spartans fell to South Carolina State 5-0. SCSU held NSU's bats quiet to just one hit. Norfolk State is coached by Carrie Holt who enters her second season with the program. In her first season at NSU, Holt guided her team to a 24-23 record.

Throughout the season the Spartans have struggled from the plate. As a team Norfolk State has the worst batting average in the MEAC with a .184. However, NSU's top hitter this season is Rylie Gilbreath with a .324 batting average. The junior from Meridian, Idaho has produced five multi-hit games. The Spartans go-to arm out of the bullpen this season has been Emma Zeig. Zeig in her 32 innings of work leads the team in strikeouts with 20.
