Lady Pirates Host Rivals Howard in Non-Conference Clash

HAMPTON, Va. (March 4, 2024) … After hosting the HU/NSU Classic, Hampton returns to home hosting rival Howard. The series has favored the Lady Pirates with HU going 7-3 in the 10 matchups. Hampton has also won the last three contests inside the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. Tuesday's doubleheader is set to begin at noon. 

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Hampton went 2-2 this past weekend at the HU/NSU Classic defeating FDU and Holy Cross. In both games, the Lady Pirates were able to use their speed as an advantage. Forty-one percent of HU's steals this season came in the previous four games. While the Lady Pirates are still searching for their first home run of the season, Hampton sits third in the Coastal Athletic Association for triples. 

Freshman Leah Maduro has become a staple in the Lady Pirates' starting lineup as of late. Maduro in this past weekend's slate of games went 3-5 from the plate recording a double and a triple. Taylor Ivey currently leads Hampton in batting average this season at .300. While she is the only Lady Pirates to have a batting average over .300, Aitirihna Aiken (.290) and Carmynn Bonner (.288) are close behind.

A Look at the Bison

Howard enters tomorrow's doubleheader with a 13-5 overall record. Before falling to Providence at the DeMarini Invitational, the Bison had won 11 straight games. Howard is coached by Tori Tyson who enters her sixth season with the program. During Tyson's tenure, the program won its second-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship.

The Bison have one of the top hitters in the MEAC with Bianca Worthy. In 18 games this season, Worthy has recorded a conference-high 28 hits while posting an impressive .500 batting average. Sophomore Maryn Jordan also is off to a strong start with a .459 batting average. Coach Tyson's squad also has one best pitchers in the conference. Through the first 18 games, Julia Holt has a 1.62 ERA. The Bison also have another solid arm with Mia Gonzales. Against Gonzales, opponents have a batting average of .233, a MEAC low.
