Lady Pirates Continue Home Slate of Games Against Drexel

HAMPTON, Va. (April 11, 2024) … Hampton University softball continues its home slate of games against Drexel for a three-game series. The Lady Pirates have not faced the Dragons since the 2022 season.  Coach Monique White's squad is 2-3 against Drexel in their last five matchups. The Dragons currently sit seventh in the Coastal Athletic Association. 

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

In its last time out, Hampton fell to the Campbell Camels 3-1. Earlier this week, Campbell took down the number three team in the nation Duke 3-2. Carmynn Bonner went 2-8 in the series against CU and has recorded at least one hit in 13 of the past 15 games. During this stretch, Bonner has had a batting average of .333 while tallying five doubles, 10 RBIs, and a home run. Freshman Angelina Branch tossed her third complete game of the 2024 campaign. Branch held one of the CAA's top offenses to four hits and two earned runs. 

So far this season, Hampton has one of the better on-base percentages in the conference (.330). The Lady Pirates with 40 doubles have recorded fourth most in the CAA. HU does lead the conference in walks drawn and is 77th in the nation. Both Bonner and Emily Kepple have been the Lady Pirates' best hitters this season. Both currently have a batting average of over .300.

A Look at the Dragons

Drexel enters the series with a 12-18 overall record and is 7-7 in the CAA. The Dragons went 5-11 in the non-conference portion of their schedule. DU won its last conference series taking two games from Towson. In their last time out, the Dragons fell to Lehigh 11-3.  Drexel is coached by Katie Jansson who enters her third season with the program. In her first season, Jansson developed four All-CAA athletes. 

The Dragons have one the best hitters in the conference with senior outfielder Grace Abbonizio.  Abbonizio is batting over .400 and has a team-high in hits (32). The West Chester, Pa. native, has only tallied 10 RBIs in her 30 games started. Drexel's go-to arm out of the bullpen is Lindsay Nelson. While Nelson is second on the team for appearances, she has pitched a team-high 86.2 innings.
