Hampton Softball Hosts North Carolina Central in Mid-Week Doubleheader

HAMPTON, Va. (April 16, 2024) … After coming off their second CAA series win, the Lady Pirates host North Carolina Central. Hampton is 4-6 in its last 10 contests picking up wins against Drexel and North Carolina A&T. Historically the matchup has favored Coach Monique White's squad winning seven out of the last 10. Since the 2010 season, Hampton is 5-2 against the Eagles at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. 

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

In both of its wins last weekend, Hampton was able to pull away late. In game two versus Drexel Taryn Bennett secured the 7-6 victory for HU on a strikeout. During the final contest, freshman Angelina Branch had a base knock bringing in two runs making it tied 6-6. The Lady Pirates took advantage of an error made by the Dragons for a walk-off win in the eighth. Carmynn Bonner had a superb series going 5-11 from the plate. Bonner with 13 doubles this season leads the Coastal Athletic Association. Emily Workman would also double her win total for the 2024 campaign picking up two wins against the Dragons.

Throughout the season Emily Kepple has been solid offensively and defensively for the Lady Pirates. The sixth-year senior has the second-highest batting average on the team with a .290. Kepple is also second in the conference for the most runners caught stealing. Hampton's go-to arm out of the bullpen during the 2024 campaign is Emily Workman. This past weekend, Workman doubled her win total for the 2024 campaign picking up two wins against the Dragons.

A Look at the Eagles

North Carolina Central enters Wednesday's mid-week matchup with a 13-29 overall record and is 9-6 in the MEAC. The Eagles are currently on a three-game winning streak and have won four out of their last five. In its most recent time out, NCCU defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 11-1 in five innings. The Eagles tallied 10 hits while only committing one error. North Carolina Central is coached by Cat Tarvin who is finishing her fourth season with the program. 

Throughout the season Coach Tarvin's squad has been a solid defensive team. The Eagles are 51st in the country for double plays per game. Jaden Davis is one of the better pitchers in the MEAC. Davis has tallied a conference-high three shutouts. The Knightdale, N.C. native, has the lowest ERA on the team with a 3.78.  The Eagle's top hitter this season is Makiya Graves. Graves is the only North Carolina Central player with a batting average over .300 (. The senior has tallied 38 hits and 19 RBIs.
