Hampton Softball Continues Conference Play on the Road Against Elon

HAMPTON, Va. (April 18, 2024) … After a brief break in the Coastal Athletic Association schedule, the Lady Pirates are set to continue conference play against Elon. Entering the weekend, Hampton is currently four games back from making the conference tournament. Currently, Elon sits sixth in the conference standings holding onto the final spot for the tournament. Coach Monique's squad will have an opportunity to shake up the CAA standings.

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

Hampton is currently on a four-game winning streak picking up wins over Drexel and North Carolina Central. In their most recent time out the Lady Pirates took both contests from NCCU. Hampton's bats were able to produce throughout both games tallying a total of 17 hits in the series. Senior Brooke Williams had a solid series going 2-5 from the plate with two doubles and four RBIs. The Winslow, Ariz. native is on a six-game hitting streak. In the first contest of the doubleheader against the Eagles, Angelina Branch had an impressive game going four innings on the mound and recorded two hits. 

Throughout the 2024 campaign, Hampton's bullpen has been one of the team's strengths. The Lady Pirates have recorded the second most saves in the conference (4). While Hampton's opponents have a batting average of .292, they have only given up the third most home runs. HU's go-to arm out of the bullpen has been sixth-year senior Emily Workman. The Kingston, Tenn. native, is seventh in the CAA for innings pitched (104.1).

A Look at the Phoenix

Elon enters the series with a 16-25 overall record and is 10-8 in the CAA. The Phoenix are 6-4 in their last 10 conference contests picking up wins against Campbell, Charleston, and Towson. In its most recent time out, EU defeated the Tigers 6-0. The Phoenix were able to jump out to a commanding lead in the first three innings producing six runs. Elon is coached by Kathy Bocock who has been with the program for 13 seasons.

The Phoenix are one of the better-hitting teams in the conference. Coach Bocock's squad has the fourth-best batting average in the CAA (0.256). Elon also has tallied the second most doubles in the league (52) and is averaging 1.27 per contest. Carley Davis, Megan Grant, and Mauir Murray all rank inside the top ten in the CAA for batters who have been hit by the most pitches. While the Phoenix are statistically one of the better offenses in the league, their bullpen has the second-worst ERA in the conference with a 5.42.
