Pirates Take on the Pride in Final Road Game Series

HAMPTON, Va. (April 25, 2024) … The Lady Pirates are back in action taking the Hofstra Pride. With six conference contests remaining, Hampton is six games back from the final spot in the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament. Hofstra currently holds the final spot and is looking to increase its seed for the postseason. Historically the matchup has favored the Pride with Hofstra leading the series 4-0. 

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

In its last time out Hampton fell to Elon in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader was close with the Phoenix pulling away late to secure the win. Freshman Leah Maduro had a productive series for the Lady Pirates. She was the only Lady Pirate to record a hit in all three games. The Miami, Fla. native, went 4-10 from the plate with an RBI and a triple. 

The CAA Preseason Watchlist selection Carmynn Bonner has been on a tear this season for Hampton. Bonner in conference play is batting a team-high .347 which is a .175 increase from her freshman campaign. The Dayton, Ohio native, has also doubled her hit total from the 2023 season recording 25 hits against CAA opponents. Hampton's youth have been key contributors to the Lady Pirates' bullpen. Freshman Taryn Bennett has the lowest ERA on the team with a 3.26. On average, opponents have a .238 batting against Angelina Brach.

A Look at the Pride

In its last time out Hofstra defeated Fordham 7-6 at home in Bill Edwards Stadium. Heading into the bottom of the fourth frame, the Pride trailed the Rams 6-2. In the next three innings, Hofstra manufactured five runs to jump out to a one-run advantage. While Fordham had runners on first and second in the seventh, the Pride got back-to-back outs ending the contest. Becca Vaillancourt had a superb game tallying three hits and four RBIs. 

Vaillancourt throughout the 2024 campaign has been the Pirde's top hitter. She is their only batter to have a batting average over .300 (.361). The Tiverton, R.I. native has also tallied nine home runs in her 39 games played. Julia Apsel is the Pride's ace out of the bullpen. Apsel this season has pitched 13 complete games with a 1.58 ERA.
