Lady Pirates Take on Norfolk State in Final Non-Conference Contest of the Season

Hampton, Va. (April 29, 2024) … Hampton University softball returns home to the Lady Softball Stadium after six straight road contests. The Lady Pirates will take on the Spartans of Norfolk State at 3:00 p.m. this Tuesday. Hampton has already faced NSU once this season and came out on top 13-4. Historically, the Lady Pirates have done well against the Spartans winning six of the 10. Since the 1998 season, HU has faced Norfolk State on 94 separate occasions. 

A Look at the Lady Pirates

In its last time out, Hampton fell to Hofstra 2-1. While the Lady Pirates outhit the Pride 7-6, HU could only produce one run. Sophomore Aitirhna Aiken had a solid game going 3-4 from the plate. The Alexandria, Va. native, was the only Lady Pirate to record multiple hits. Angelina Branch had a solid showing out of the bullpen for Hampton. In her four innings of work, Branch only gave up two hits while tallying seven strikeouts.

Throughout the 2024 campaign, Carmynn Bonner has been one the best bats in Hampton's starting lineup. Bonner currently is leading the Lady Pirates in batting average with a .329. The Dayton, Ohio native, leads the Coastal Athletic Association with 14 doubles and is 38th in the country. Senior Brooke Williams has been an RBI machine for Coach Monique White's squad. She brought in a team-high 25 runs this season.

A Look at the Spartans

Norfolk State enters tomorrow's contest with a 4-42 overall record and is 3-18 in the MEAC. The Spartans in their last time out lost to Howard 12-4 in six innings. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, NSU only trailed by one. However, the Bison scored seven runs in the last two frames. The Spartans are coached by Carrie Hoeft, who is finishing her second season with the program. 

Norfolk State's Rylie Gilbreath has been the Spartan's top hitter this season with a .350 batting average. The Meridian, Idaho native, has tallied the fifth most hits in the MEAC (48). So far this season Gilbreath's tallied 12 multi-hit contests. Maddy Morris is the Spartan's go-to arm out of the bullpen. Morris has appeared in 22 games while pitching a team-high 69 innings.
