HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 27, 2025) … Hampton University softball is set to host its final multiple-team event of the 2025 campaign. The Pirates are set to face South Dakota and UMass Lowell at their home stadium. Coach Cat Tarvin's side enters this weekend's slate of games with a 6-6 record.

ABOUT HAMPTON

The Pirates went 2-2 this past weekend at the Pirate-Spartan Invite. Hampton opened the tournament with an 8-7 victory against St, Bonaventure in eight innings. HU's offense was able to produce throughout the slate of games producing 21 runs. Carmynn Bonner once again had another strong weekend going 10-for-16 from the plate while tallying 5 RBIs. Bonner also manufactured three triples. The Dayton, Ohio product is on an eight-game hitting streak and has at least recorded two hits per contest during this stretch.  Both Santrea Armstead and Amani Johnson finished this past weekend with a .500 batting average. Johnson recorded five RBIs in the past four games.

Throughout the first 12 games, Hampton has been one of the top offenses in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Pirates are scoring six runs per game which is the second most in the conference and 66th in the nation. Coach Tarvin's side has amassed the fourth-most total runs (66). Bonner's offensive production this season has helped HU reach these marks. The Junior sits 19th in the country for batting average (.541) and is 33rd in the nation for on-base percentage (.585).

ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA

South Dakota State enters the Pirate-Spartan Invite with a 9-5 overall record. While the Coyotes have not played a home contest, South Dakota is currently on a four-game winning streak. The Coyotes are coached by Robert Wagner who is in his ninth season with the program. While at South Dakota, Wagner has tallied 180 wins. Last season Coach Wagner's side went 23-30 and was 7-10 in the Summit League.   

The Coyotes are one of the top offenses in the Summit League. South Dakota has an impressive .308 batting average. Coach Wagner's squad is effective at using bunts to move baserunners. The Coyotes have tallied 14 sacrifice bunts which is the 11th most in the country. South Dakota has the top two batters in the Summit League with Tatum Villotta and Delaney White. The Duo is batting over .450 this season and has accounted for 56 percent of the team's total hits. 

ABOUT UMASS LOWELL

UMass Lowell enters the weekend with a 0-7 record and has not played a home game this season. The River Hawks have already faced one CAA opponent this season Campbell. UMass Lowell fell to the Camels 4-3 at the Camel Invitational. The River Hawks are coached by Jen Starek who is in her fourth season at the helm. Coach Starek has coached at all three NCAA divisions. Over her 22 years as a head coach, Strek has amassed over 500 victories. 

The River Hawks have been one of the best sides in the America East at stealing bases. UMass Lowell's 11 stolen bases are second in their league. As a team, Coach Starek's side has not been caught stealing once this season. Emily Baumes is the River Hawk's top hitter with a .500 batting average. Daumes has tallied a team-high 12 hits and five RBIs.
