HAMPTON, Va. (March 11, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team returns to its home field this weekend hosting the Elon Phoenix. This weekend's slate of games marks the Pirates home conference opener. Since joining the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) the program has not took a game in a home conference opening series.

ABOUT THE SERIES
 
Hampton's first matchup against Elon came during the 1998 season. The Pirates fell to Phoenix 4-3. Predominantly the series has taken place at Elon's Hunt Softball Park. Prior to this weekend, HU has only faced Elon once in its home stadium. The Pirates are looking for their first-ever win against the Phoenix.
 
ABOUT HAMPTON

Coach Cat Tarvin's side began conference play against Charleston and fell in all three games. Freshman Cassidy Lee was on the only Pirate to record a hit in all three contests of the series. Lee went 3-for-7 from the plate and recorded 2 RBIs. Both Carmynn Bonner and Megan Ramos had solid game one's against the Cougars. Bonner went 2-for-4 while producing an RBI and a double. Ramos also recorded two hits in game one of the series.
 
Bonner still is one of the top offensive players in the country. The Dayton, Ohio native, leads the CAA in batting average with a .452 and ranks 55th in the nation. Bonner has amassed 28 hits which is second in the conference. The junior outfielder is also second in the league for triples with four. This season, Aitirhna Aiken has been one of the better defensive catchers in the conference. Aiken's five baserunners caught stealing is the third most in the CAA.
 
Senior Jada Evans is Hampton's go-to arm out of the bullpen. Evans has the lowest ERA on the team with a 3.02. The Seaford, Del. product leads the league in complete games with five. Sophomore Angelina Branch is off to a strong start. Branch has already passed her strikeout total from last season. Her 38 strikeouts this season are the sixth most in the conference.

ABOUT ELON

The Phoenix began conference play against the Hofstra Pride. Elon won all three games in the series. The Phoenix have played in four road contests and are 0-4 in away games. Elon is coached by Kathy Bocock who is in her 14th season with the program. With the Phoenix Coach Bocock has amassed over 325 wins.
 
Throughout the 2025 season, Elon has been one of the better offensive teams in the conference. The Phoenix have hit 17 home runs which is second most in the CAA. Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Wells has helped Elon reach this mark with six homers. Chloe Hatzopoulos is close behind with four. Both Wells and Hatzopoulos have already hit home runs against CAA foes. McKenna McCard is Elon's go-to arm out of the bullpen. The senior has made six starts and pitched 36.2 innings.
