Hampton Softball Set to Host Bowie State in Final Home Non-Conference Matchup

HAMPTON, Va. (March 24, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team hosts Bowie State in its final home non-conference contest of the 2025 season. The Pirates matchup against the Bulldogs marks the second non-division I opponent HU has faced this season.  

ABOUT THE SERIES 

Hampton has not faced Bowie State since the 2010 campaign. The Pirates won both meetings during the 2010 Season. The previous two matchups were the only two in the program's history. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

The Pirates secured its first conference series win against the Drexel Dragons. In both wins against Drexel, the contest went into extra innings. Coach Cat Tarvin's side is now 4-0 in extra innings contests. Kylee Quinn continued to be a solid bat for the Pirates. Quinn went 8-for-10 from the plate this past weekend while recording two triples. Freshman Cassidy Lee also had a great series against the Dragons. Lee tallied two home runs and six RBIs. 

Throughout the season, Hampton has been towards the top of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) standings for triples. The Pirates are 34th in the country for triples producing eight. Carmynn Bonner has led the charge for Coach Tarvin's squad with the third most in the CAA (5) which is also the sixth most in the nation. The Dayton, Ohio product also ranks among the top five in the conference for batting average, on-base percentage, and doubles. 

ABOUT BOWIE STATE

Bowie State began Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play this past weekend. While one contest was postponed, the Bulldogs went 5-0. Bowie State has not played a Division I opponent this season. During the 2024 campaign, Bowie State faced three Division I foes. The Bulldogs were also CIAA champions a year ago and made the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Bowie State State is coached by Edward Powell who is in his sixth season with the program. 

Coreena Dunham has been Coach Powell's top hitter this season. The junior outfielder currently has a .375 batting average while producing nine doubles. Her nine doubles are the second most in the CIAA and 88th at the Division II level. Jayla Hill has proven to be a long-ball threat for the Bulldogs throughout the 2025 season. The senior leads their conference in home runs with six and is 76th in the country.
