Hampton Softball Resumes Conference Play Against The Stony Brook Seawolves

HAMPTON, Va. (March 27, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team resumes Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play against the Stony Brook Seawolves this weekend. The three-game series against the Seawolves is set to begin on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Only one game separates the two sides in the conference standings. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

The Pirates have only faced the Seawolves three times in school history. The first matchup came during the 2006 campaign with Stony Brook winning 13-8. Stony Brook took two games from Hampton in the 2023 series. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

Coach Cat Tarvin's side is coming off a 4-2 victory over Bowie State this past Tuesday. Junior Carmynn Bonner began the contest with an early homer for HU in the bottom of the first. The Pirates were hitless for three innings until Santrea Armstead recorded a base knock to left field. During the top of the fourth Bowie State tied up the contest. Another run came across the plate in the fifth stanza for the Bulldogs to take control of the game.  Hampton was able to mount a comeback in the sixth frame. Bonner began the inning with a double to left field. Kylie Hill tied up the contest on a base knock up the middle. Meagan Ramos brought in the winning run with a two-RBI single.

Throughout the season, the Pirates have ranked towards the top of the country for triples. Hampton has recorded 10 triples which is the 29th most in the nation. Bonner has amassed the eighth-most triples (5) in the country. On the mound for the Pirates, Angelina Branch has recorded 64 strikeouts. The Chesterfield, Va. native sits third in the conference for strikeouts. Branch has also pitched 88.2 innings which is the second most in the CAA. 

ABOUT STONY BROOK

The Seawolves enter the weekend eighth in the conference standings and are tied with Towson and UNCW. Stony Brook began the season with a win over Big 12 foe Iowa State 8-2. The Seawolves have won series against Towson and Charleston. However, Stony Brook did lose all three games to the Delaware Blue Hens. SBU is coached by Megan Bryant who is in her 25th season at the helm. With the Seawolves Bryant has won 675 games. In her 30-plus-year coaching career, she has amassed over 1,000 victories.

Kyra McFarland has been one of the league's best hitters with a .402 batting average. McFarland was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week. She put forth a .643/.688/1.071 slash line in a week the Seawolves went 3-2. McFarland recorded her first home run of the 2025 campaign in Stony Brook's win over Charleston. The walk-off homer secured the Seawolves' second CAA series victory. Crimson Rice is Stony Brook's go-to arm on the mound. Rice enters the weekend with a 4.45 ERA and has pitched 44 innings.
