Pirates Set to Face Long-Time Rival Norfolk State in Non-Conference Action

HAMPTON, Va. (April 14, 2025) …Coach Cat Tarvin's side closes out a seven-game road stint against long-time rival Norfolk State. The Pirates are coming off a weekend series to Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) leaders Campbell. Tuesday afternoon's contest will mark the second time that Hampton and Norfolk State have faced each other this season. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

The Pirates and Spartans have already squared off once this season. Norfolk State defeated Hampton in its home stadium 13-4 back on March 18. While the Spartans have a slight edge in the last 10 contents at NSU Softball Field 6-4, the Pirates won the most recent road matchup 13-4 last season. During the game, Kylee Quinn went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with two RBIs. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

Hampton faced Campbell this past weekend in a three-game series. The Camels took all three games from the Pirates. During game one, Angelina Branch made her first start on the mound in two weeks. Leah Maduro was the only Pirates to record a base knock in all three games. In the series closing contest, one conference's top offensive players Carmynn Bonner produced her third home run of the 2025 campaign.  

With less than a month remaining in the season, Bonner sits third in the CAA for batting average with a .410. The Dayton, Ohio product also ranks fourth in the league for OPS (1.135). She has amassed six triples and 12 doubles this season. Hampton has been one top teams in the conference for triples. The Pirates have recorded 11 triples which is the 42nd most in the country. Branch is Hampton's go-to arm pitching a team-high 103.1 innings. 

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE

Norfolk State enters the non-conference contest second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). So far this season Coach Angie Nicholson's side has only lost one conference series. The Spartans are 8-2 in their last 10 games only falling to East Carolina and Maryland Eastern Shore.  In its last time out, Norfolk State took all three games from Morgan State.

Kailey Bryant is one of the Spartan's top hitters this season. The Chesapeake, Va. native, has produced 35 hits which is the second most in their conference. Kailey also has recorded 16 RBIs, six doubles, and five triples. Amaya McPherson is the Spartan's go-to arm this season. McPherson enters Tuesday with an 8-5 record. Her 2.90 ERA is currently the fourth-best in the MEAC.
