HAMPTON, Va. (April 17, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's side continues Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play against the Delaware Blue Hens. The Pirates are nearing the end of the season with only three conference series left.

ABOUT THE SERIES

The series between Hampton and Delaware began during the 2011 season. The Blue Hens took the first meeting 10-6 in HU's home stadium. Hampton's only win of the series came in a neutral-site meeting during the 2014 campaign, 7-2. Since both schools have been members of the conference, the Blue Hens are 3-0 against the Pirates.

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out, Hampton defeated longtime rival Norfolk State 4-3 in dramatic fashion. The Pirates entered the top of the second down by a run. Santra Armstead's solo shot tied the contest 1-1. Armstead's homer was the first of her collegiate career. Another solo home run in the fifth gave Hampton the slight edge. While the Spartans recorded a two-RBI triple to regain the lead, the Pirates responded in the top of the seventh. Kylie Hill's base knock up the middle scored the tying run. Freshman Cassidy Lee came up clutch with her second single of the day, producing the game-winning run.

The Pirates have one of the conference's top offensive players in Carmynn Bonner. Bonner sits third in the CAA for batting average with a .405. The Dayton, Ohio native, also ranks third for hits (51), second for doubles (12), and second for triples (6). Hampton has had three different student-athletes record two or more home runs. The last time the Pirates achieved this mark was the shortened 2020 campaign. Angelina Branch continues to produce strikeouts at a high level. Her 73 strikeouts are the seventh most in the conference. Branch with 11 games remaining has already surpassed her strikeout total from last season (53).

ABOUT DELAWARE

The Blue Hens enter the series second in the conference standings, only two games back from Campbell. Delaware is also on a seven-game winning streak with victories over Villanova, North Carolina A&T, Delaware State, and UNCW. The Blue Hens are coached by Jen Steele, who is in her seventh season with the program. Delaware set multiple program records a year ago, breaking the program record for wins in a season (39) and conference victories (21).

Sydney Shaffer is the Blue Hens' top offensive player this season. In 41 games, Shaffer is third in the conference for batting average (.405). The Ashland, Va. product has hit 14 home runs, which is good for the 35th most in the nation. Delaware's bullpen is one of the best in the conference with a 2.11 ERA. The Blue Hens go to arm is Billie Kerwood. Kerwood has posted a 17-8 record while accumulating 180 strikeouts.
