Volleyball travels to Norfolk State for non-conference match Tuesday

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 22, 2025) ...The 2025 Hampton University volleyball team travels to Norfolk State for a non-conference match Tuesday night at 6 p.m. inside Gill Gymnasium. The Pirates are coming off a weekend in which they dropped two road contests at Elon. The Pirates are coming off a weekend in which they dropped two road contests at Elon.

Hampton began conference play with two hard fought losses to Elon. Hampton was led by Katerina Pappa who recroded 14 kills on the weekend. Morgan Warren added 36 assists to the offensive side, while Maria Clara Andrade posted 14 digs on defense.  

Last season, the Spartans took down Hampton in both meetings. Ida Wiszomirska led Hampton with 28  assists in the two matches. Gabrielle Gilbert led the Spartans in the two matches last season with 38 kills, while Sydney McCree added 77 assist.

Hampton leads the all-time series 70-21, with Norfolk State entering on a three-game winning streak. 

ABOUT HAMPTON
Racquel Frazier currently ranks seventh in the conference with 110 kills. Warren leads the Pirates in assists with 237, best for sixth in the CAA. Nationally, Frazier ranks in the top 150 individually in attacks per set (9.76).

Frazier leads the Pirates in kills, while Katerina Pappa (73) and Jaya Rimm (51) have over 50. Warren (69), Pappa (60), Andrade (58), Frazier (59), Nia Thomas (41) and Rimm (40) have all logged over 40 digs in 2025.

The Pirates have seen a majority of their production this season come from underclassmen as they have just one upperclassmen on the roster. 

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE
The Spartans bring a 0-12 (0-0) record into Tuesday nights contest. They are led by Gilbert's 144 kills. She currently ranks 53rd in the nation in attacks per set at 10.79, and 62nd in total attacks with 453. McCree ranks fourth in the MEAC with 266 assists on the season.

Gilbert was a preseason All-MEAC selection, while the Spartans were picked fourth. They enter Tuesday nights contest following a weekend at Clemson where they played in the Big Orange Bash. 

CROSSTOWN RIVALRY 
The Pirates and Spartans have squared away 91 times in the two schools rich history. The Pirates have won 70 of those 91 matches with their first win coming in 1980 when Hampton won 3-1 (15-3, 15-3, 12-15, 15-11). Hampton won 35 matches in a row from 1994-2006, while Norfolk States longest winning streak was seven from 2007-2010. 

TAKE ME HOME
Gabby (Calloway) Tlelima makes her return to Hampton as an assistant coach for the 2025 season. Tlelima spent four years playing for the Pirates from 2018-2022 where she played in 91 matches. She recroded 709 kills over the course of her career, adding 717 digs. 

UP NEXT
Hampton returns to Holland Hall Friday, Sept. 26 for a 6 p.m. match with Stony Brook. The two will then square off again Saturday at 1 p.m.
