NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team held tough against Old Dominion on Sunday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, but the Lady Monarchs mounted a huge run in the second half to take an 83-64 win.
Hampton (2-7) pulled within 42-40 when
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a pair of free throws with 14:31 to play, but the Lady Monarchs went on a 19-5 run that spanned just over eight minutes. Vicki Collier got the run started with a tip-in with 14:05 to play and ended with 6:28 to play, when Carolann Cloutier sank a pair of free throws.
The Lady Pirates would pull to within 10, 70-60, with 3:02 to play following a 3-point play from
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.), but ODU (2-6) closed the game on a 13-4 run.
Fortune scored a game-high 21 points before fouling out with 6:08 to play, going 6-for-15 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Perry recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Four Lady Monarchs scored in double figures, led by Shadashia Green and Tia Lewis, who each had 15 points and a team-high six rebounds. Mairi Buchan scored 14 points, while Collier added 10.
ODU shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the floor and 3-for-7 (42.9 percent) from behind the arc, while Hampton shot 30.9 percent (21-for-68) from the floor, making just two of 17 3-point attempts. Hampton forced 23 ODU turnovers, but only managed 14 points off of them.
The Lady Monarchs out-rebounded Hampton 44-36, while also holding advantages in 2nd-chance points (22-18) and fast break points (12-8).
ODU opened the game on a 10-1 run, and Hampton didn't score its first field goal until Perry hit a jumper with 16:37 to go. The Lady Pirates pulled within three, 14-11, when Fortune hit a layup with 12:55 to go in the half, but ODU scored the next four points to extend the lead again.
ODU led 33-27 at the half.
Perry had a team-high nine points in the first half, while Fortune had eight and
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added six.
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) had a team-high six rebounds. Hampton shot 34.5 percent (10-for-29) in the first half, going 1-for-8 from behind the arc and 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
ODU shot 35.7 percent (10-for-28) in the first half, and held a 21-18 rebounding advantage in the first half. Lewis had a team-high nine points in the opening 20 minutes, with Green and Buchan adding eight apiece.
