PIRATES OFF TO FACE UVA AGAIN

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the fourth straight season, the Hampton University men's basketball team will travel to the John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday to take on the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia at 7 p.m.

The Pirates (2-9) have lost four straight games following Sunday's 82-74 loss at Towson, despite 31 points from senior guard Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.). Wednesday's game against Virginia (5-4) will be Hampton's last contest before the holiday, and the end of a month-long road trip. The Cavaliers snapped a two-game losing streak on Monday, beating NJIT 68-37 at the John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers lead the all-time series with the Pirates 5-0, including last year's 74-48 win at John Paul Jones Arena. The two teams first met on Nov. 25, 1998, when Virginia came away with a 116-66 home win. Four of the five meetings between the two teams have been in Charlottesville; Virginia came to the HU Convocation Center to open the 1999-2000 season, coming away with a 102-56 win on Nov. 10. This will mark the fourth straight season in which the Cavaliers and Pirates have met.

The Pirates are 1-12 all-time against teams from the ACC, including their 0-5 all-time mark against Virginia. Hampton is 0-3 all-time against Maryland; 0-1 against North Carolina State; and 0-1 against Clemson. Hampton's lone win over an ACC team came in 2001, when the Pirates defeated North Carolina 77-69 at the Dean Smith Center on Nov. 16. Wednesday's contest at Virginia is Hampton's only ACC game this season.

The Pirates are a combined 2-7 away from the HU Convocation Center so far this season, going 1-5 in true road games and 1-2 on neutral courts following Sunday's 82-74 loss at Towson. Hampton defeated Wyoming 78-67 during the World Vision Basketball Challenge for its only road win so far this season, before grabbing its first neutral-court win with a 59-56 decision over Monmouth. Hampton also lost the 2009 Big Apple Classic at Madison Square Garden, falling 56-54 to Howard on Dec. 5, before falling 55-52 at Delaware on Dec. 9. The Pirates will not return to the Convocation Center until after the New Year, when they take on Fordham on Jan. 3.

The Cavaliers went 10-18 i 2008-09, finishing 11th in the ACC with a 4-12 conference mark before falling 76-63 to Boston College in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Sylven Landesburg, who was 10th in the ACC in scoring last season at 16.6 points per game, was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Virginia was picked to finish 11th in the ACC this season, and Landesburg received six votes to just miss being named to the Preseason All-ACC team.

The Cavaliers return all five starters from last year's squad, in its first year under the direction of head coach Tony Bennett. Landesburg leads the Cavaliers in scoring so far this season, averaging 16.1 points per game; he's led Virginia in scoring five times in 2009-10. Mike Scott is averaging 13.1 points per contest to go along with a team-high 9.3 rebounds a night – leading the team in rebounding in seven of nine games so far this season. Sammy Zeglinski is the third Cavalier in double figures this season, averaging 10.6 points a game.

The Cavaliers are averaging 68.7 points a game on offense, while only giving up 59.4 points a night on defense. Virginia is out-rebounding its opponents by an average of 36.1-30.7 per game.
