PIRATES TO VISIT BLUE HENS

NEWARK, Del. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will continue its lengthy road trip on Wednesday, when they take on the Fightin' Blue Hens of the University of Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center at 7 p.m.

The Pirates have lost two straight, including the Big Apple Classic on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, falling 56-54 to Howard in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener. Delaware has lost six of its first seven games this season, including its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener on Saturday, falling 65-44 at Old Dominion.

The series between Hampton and Delaware is tied 1-1; after the Pirates took the first game of the series 51-50 on Nov. 27, 2007 at the Bob Carpenter Center, the Blue Hens came to the HU Convocation Center last season to take a 75-66 win on Dec. 9, 2008.

Finishing 13-19 in 2008-09, the Blue Hens finished ninth in the CAA with a 6-12 record for their fifth straight losing season; Delaware fell 54-41 to Georgia State in the first round of the CAA Championships. Senior Marc Egerson was named First Team All-CAA after averaging 15.4 points and 10.3 rebounds a game. Coming into the 2009-10 season, the Blue Hens were picked to finish 11th in the CAA.

So far this season, junior guard Jawan Carter is leading the Blue Hens in scoring, averaging 17.4 points a contest; he's led the team in scoring in five of its first seven games. Junior guard Alphonso Dawson is the only other Delaware player averaging double figures, pouring in 11.0 points a contest. Redshirt-freshman forward Kelvin McNeil leads Delaware in rebounding, pulling down 6.1 boards a night – he pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with 10 points in Saturday's loss at Old Dominion.

The Blue Hens are averaging just 64.6 points a game on offense, while giving up 79.1 points a night on defense.

Since 1995, the Pirates are 11-28 all-time against teams in the Colonial Athletic Association. In addition to Hampton's 1-7 mark against VCU, the Pirates are 5-9 against William & Mary, 1-4 against George Mason, 0-1 against Towson, 1-0 against Georgia State, 2-4 against Old Dominion, 1-1 against Delaware and 0-2 against James Madison. Hampton faced four CAA schools last season, falling 82-73 to Towson after beating George Mason 50-44; the Pirates also beat Georgia State 62-53 and fell to Delaware 75-66 last season. After losing a home contest against VCU and falling on the road to William & Mary, the Pirates will play two more CAA teams this year: at Delaware on Wednesday and at Towson (Dec. 19).
