VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Hampton University softball team won the Lady Pirates Classic for the second straight year on Sunday, taking the championship game 6-0 over Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Princess Anne Sports Complex.
Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) was named Tournament MVP, while freshman
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hampton (13-13) led 1-0 after the first inning, breaking it open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Black won her third game of the tournament on the mound, while also recording two hits.
Ashley Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, Calif.) also had two hits, including a double, for the Lady Pirates, driving in three runs.
Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also had two hits apiece for Hampton. Saunders, who homered twice in the tournament, had a triple in the title game.
The Lady Pirates held off Barton in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday to secure a 3-2 win – just one of three wins on the day for Hampton.
Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, VA) and Saunders each had two hits for the Lady Pirates – including a home run from Saunders in the second inning – as did
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, CA).
Amber Fletcher led the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run for Barton, but Hampton held on for the win.
Hampton then defeated Queensborough 8-0 in five innings, pulling away with a four-spot in the top of the fourth inning. Black hit a three-run home run to center field to give Hampton the big blast of the game.
Garcia led the Lady Pirates with three hits as
Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, GA) picked up her third win of the season on the mound.
A five-run first inning helped Hampton run past Winston-Salem State 7-0 for the Lady Pirates' third win of the day. Estep hit a three-run home run in the opening frame before Black drove home another run with a double to center field.
Black, who also picked up her seventh win on the mound, doubled home another run in the fourth inning.
Hampton won its first game on Friday, taking a 10-2 decision over Coppin State. The Lady Pirates were already in control before scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to a two-run double from Saunders and a two-run single from
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.).
Byrd added a home run to left field in the sixth inning, while Saunders homered in the fifth. Black picked up the win, while also collecting two hits in the win. Garcia, Byrd and Weissenbach also had two hits each for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Pirates, who have won six in a row, will return to action Tuesday, when they take to the road to face Liberty in a doubleheader. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
