HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team swept a doubleheader with Howard on Saturday at Lady Pirates Field, taking the first game 3-2 before winning the second game 6-0.
The Lady Pirates (16-16) are now over .500 in MEAC play with a 3-2 conference mark.
The Lady Pirates struck first in the first inning of the first game, when
Ashley Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, Calif.) doubled home
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) to give Hampton a 1-0 lead.
Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, Va.) added a two-run home run to center field in the second inning, her fourth of the season, to push the lead to 3-0.
Howard scored twice in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady Pirates held on behind seven strong innings from
Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario), who struck out three and walked none in picking up her 11th win of the season.
The Lady Pirates scored three runs in the opening inning of the second game to take immediate control.
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) and
Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) had RBI singles for Hampton in the inning.
Garcia added her fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning, and
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth.
Black held Howard to just four hits in the second game, picking up her 12th win of the season with six strikeouts in seven shutout innings.
The Lady Pirates will return to action Sunday, when they host Howard at noon. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the start of the game.
