HAMPTON, Va. – Evelyn Garcia scored the winning run on an Ashley Weissenbach single in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday, as the Hampton University softball team came from behind to take a 6-5 win over Howard at Lady Pirates Field.
Weissenbach's single knocked in both
Garcia (Poquoson, Va.) and
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) went four innings on the mound to pick up her 13th win of the season and give Hampton's three seniors – Garcia,
Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, CA) and Black – a win in their home finale on Senior Day.
Howard took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs in the frame.Courtney Young and Aisha Ledet each had RBI doubles in the inning.
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) hit her ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the of the sixth inning to pull Hampton with in 5-4.
Nicole Saez got Howard on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-run single to center field. That made the score 3-2 in favor of the Lady Pirates, as
Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) had hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lady Pirates (17-16, 4-2 MEAC) return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. for a doubleheader with the University of Virginia.
