NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University softball team swept a doubleheader against Norfolk State Wednesday night at the NSU Softball Field, taking the first game 10-6 before winning the second game 8-3.
The Lady Pirates held a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) pushed across a run with a single to left, but the big blow came when
Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) hit a three-run home run to right-center field. Her fourth home run of the season gave Hampton a 10-5 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Spartans pushed across another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Hampton held on.
Hampton pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth inning, two of them on as throwing error.
Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, Va.) pushed across another run with a single to right field. A single from
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) and a bases-loaded walk by
Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) helped Hampton scored twice more in the sixth inning.
Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) went seven innings in picking up her 16th win of the season, giving up 10 hits and six runs, four of them earned. She struck out six and walked one.
The Lady Pirates (21-21) scored in each of the first four innings of the second game to take control. Estep singled home a pair in the top of the first inning, while Black led off the top of the second with a home run to left-center field and Hampton pushed another run across on a throwing error.
Black added a two-run triple in the top of the third before another Norfolk State error allowed a run to score. Saunders added her 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to center in the fourth inning.
Jeffries went seven innings to pick up her third win of the season, giving up four hits and three runs. She struck out two and walked two.
Black went 4-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs.
The Lady Pirates will close out the regular season this Saturday and Sunday with a trip to Baltimore to take on Coppin State. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., while Sunday's game will start at noon.
