PIRATES HEADING TO NORTH CAROLINA A&T

Game Notes

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Monday, when they head to the Corbett Sports Center to face North Carolina A&T on Monday at 8 p.m. in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game.

The Pirates dropped their second straight game on Saturday, falling 66-50 at Norfolk State despite 13 points from Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Pirates shot just 29.0 percent from the floor. North Carolina A&T has lost three straight games after Saturday's 82-77 loss to Howard.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates are 19-8 against North Carolina A&T. The two teams split last season's meetings; after the Aggies beat Hampton 56-55 at the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 2, 2009, the Pirates returned the favor on March 2 at the Corbett Sports Center, escaping with a 60-59 win. Hampton has won four of the last six meetings between these two teams. The Pirates dropped the first three games in the series, starting in 1996 with an 82-75 road loss – but won 10 straight from 2001-06. Hampton is 9-4 all-time on the road against the Aggies.

North Carolina A&T went 16-16 last season, finishing tied for third at 9-7 in the MEAC before falling to Coppin State 66-63 in the MEAC Tournament. The Aggies were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC this season.

Senior guard Dwane Joshua is leading the team in scoring, pouring in 16.2 points per game, while senior guard Tavarus Alston is adding 15.2 points a night. Senior forward Robert Johnson is averaging 10.8 points per game to sit third on the team, and junior forward/center Thomas Coleman is averaging 10.1 points a night to go along with a team-high 8.1 rebounds per contest – the third-best average in the MEAC.

The Aggies are averaging 71.4 points per game on offense, while giving up 76.8 points a night. Opponents are out-rebounding North Carolina A&T by an average of 42.2-37.5 per game.

Since joining the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 1995, the Pirates are a combined 167-97 against MEAC schools. Coppin State and South Carolina State are the only MEAC schools against which Hampton does not have a winning record; the Pirates are 16-16 all-time against SCSU, while Coppin State leads the all-time series with Hampton 13-12. The Pirates are also 15-7 against Bethune-Cookman; 14-12 against Delaware State; 15-9 against Florida A&M; 24-5 against Howard; 17-6 against Maryland-Eastern Shore; 19-8 against Morgan State; 15-13 against Norfolk State; and 19-8 against North Carolina A&T. Hampton has won two MEAC regular-season titles (2001, 2002), to go along with three MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006).

The Pirates are just 1-7 in true road games this season following Saturday's 66-50 loss at Norfolk State, their only road win coming Nov. 28 at Wyoming (78-67). Hampton is also 1-2 on neutral courts, and will look for its first MEAC road win on Monday against North Carolina A&T.
