WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Charles Funches make two key free throws with 1:01 left in the game to put the Pirates up by four points as Hampton defeated Boston University in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off consolation round at the Charles E. Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University on Monday.
The Pirates improved to 3-1 on the season with their third straight win, while Boston dropped to 2-3 on the year.
The Pirates were led by
Darrion Pellum, who scored a team- and game-high 19 points, with 17 of those coming in the first half. Pellum was aided by Funches, who finished with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Pirates defense was the on the case yet again, as they held the Terriers to just 25 percent shooting on just 16-of-64 shots taken. Hampton scored 14 points off 18 Boston turnovers, thanks largely to eight steals.
“I was very pleased with the way that we defended tonight,” said Pirates head coach Ed Joyner. “Our defense has been something that we have been working on during the preseason, and we have to continue to do a good job if we want to win games.”
Hampton made 19-of-48 shots and 10-of-16 free throws to secure yet another victory. Boston University crashed the boards, as they grabbed 49 rebounds, but Hampton scored 22 points in the paint.
In the first half, Hampton made 12-of-26 shots from the floor to shoot 46 percent, while holding Boston University to 21 percent. Hampton went into the half up 30-29.
“I want us to make more shots, but that will come as the season goes on and you cannot make shots if you don't take them,” said Joyner. “All the shots that we take are good shots; they just don't fall and that happens sometimes.”
Hampton will play its final game in the NIT Tuesday night, when the Pirates face off against the host Colonials of George Washington at 8 p.m.
