HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take to the road on Sunday, as they head to the Millis Center to face the Panthers of High Point University at 3 p.m.
Since moving to Division I in 1995, this will mark the first time that Hampton and High Point face each other.
The Pirates, in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., are on a four-game winning streak following wins over Boston University and George Washington on Monday and Tuesday in the consolation rounds of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. Junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored a team-high 18 points in Tuesday's 62-51 win over George Washington, while junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 14 points and tied his career high with 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
The Panthers (2-2) are coming off a 71-63 loss at The Citadel on Wednesday. Junior guard Nick Barbour led High Point with 25 points, while freshman forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell chipped in seven points, along with a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Panthers were picked to finish fifth in the Big South this season, and Barbour was named the conference's Preseason Player of the Year. High Point returns three starters from a squad that went 15-15 last season, highlighted by Barbour, who led the Big South in scoring last season at 18.9 points per game.
So far this season, Barbour leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game, while junior guard Shay Shine is second in scoring at 11.3 points a contest. Maxwell is pulling down a team-high 6.8 rebounds a game, while sophomore forward Corey Law is pulling down 6.5 boards a contest. High Point is averaging 74.0 points per game on offense, while allowing opponents 71.0 points a night.
Since moving to Division I in 1995, Hampton is 6-5 all-time against teams in the Big South. Hampton is 1-0 against Charleston Southern, 1-1 against Coastal Carolina, 1-1 against Liberty, 2-2 against Radford and 1-1 against Winthrop. The Pirates defeated Winthrop 45-44 on Nov. 18 in their second game of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off.
