LADY PIRATES STOP SKID AT RADFORD

RADFORD, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak on Monday night, squeaking past the Highlanders of Radford University 52-51 at the Dedmon Center.

The Lady Pirates (2-4) pulled ahead 52-50 with 39 seconds to play when senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) sank two free throws, but Radford had a chance to tie the game with one second left on the clock, when Victoria Hamilton stood at the free throw line.

She made the first free throw, but missed the second.

Hampton led by as many as 10, 41-31, with 11:32 to play after Perry sank a layup, but the Highlanders (2-3) went on a 17-5 run and took a 48-46 lead with 4:02 to play after a 3-point play by Da'Naria Erwin Spencer.

A pair of free throws from junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) at the 3:17 mark tied the game at 48-48, and sophomore forward Delia Brunson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) gave the Lady Pirates a 50-48 lead with 2:15 to play with a jumper.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 14 points, on 4-for-9 shooting, going 2-for-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, and six assists, while Perry added 10 points.

The Lady Pirates shot 45.5 percent (20-for-44) from the floor and 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the free throw line. Hampton also out-rebounded Radford 32-25.

Brunson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Erwin Spencer scored a game-high 17 points for the Highlanders, who shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47) from the floor and made just 10 of 14 free throws.

Hampton took a 35-25 lead into the locker room at halftime, shooting 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the floor. McMillian had 12 of her 14 points in the opening frame.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they return to the HU Convocation Center to take on arch-rival Howard in their first conference game of the season.
