DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take to the road in search of its third straight win, as the Pirates head to Moore Gymnasium on Saturday to take on Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m.
The Pirates (14-4, 4-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., picked up their second straight win on Monday by beating North Carolina A&T 82-77 at the HU Convocation Center. Junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) led the Pirates with a career-high 36 points on 11-for-22 shooting, while junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) added 19 points and senior forward
Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) poured in 12 points.
The Wildcats (10-8, 5-0 MEAC) picked up their fifth straight win on Monday night with a 71-64 road win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Junior guard C.J. Reed and junior forward Garrius Holloman each had 15 points to lead Bethune-Cookman, while senior forward Alexander Starling added 10 points. Holloman also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Hampton is 16-8 against Bethune-Cookman since moving up to Division I in 1995. The two teams split last season's meetings; the Wildcats won 57-52 at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 23, 2010, before the Pirates returned the favor in Daytona Beach, Fla. 71-44 on Feb. 20, 2010. In all, Hampton has won seven of the last eight games in the series. The Wildcats won the first two meetings in the series, before the Pirates won two straight. Hampton is 8-4 against Bethune-Cookman on the road.
The Wildcats went 17-16 last season, finishing fourth in the MEAC with a 7-9 conference record and advancing to the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament before falling to Delaware State. Returning four starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad, Bethune-Cookman was picked to finish fourth in the MEAC, receiving two first-place votes.
Reed is leading the Wildcats in scoring so far this season, sitting second in the MEAC with 17.9 points per game. Starling is second in scoring with 11.8 points a night to go along with his team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest, while Holloman is averaging 11.6 points per game.
Bethune-Cookman is scoring 65.8 points per night, while giving up 67.4 points a contest.
The Pirates are 4-3 in true road games so far this season, and had won three straight on the road following a season-opening loss at Wake Forest before falling 69-57 at San Francisco. Hampton has beaten Fordham (58-48), George Washington (62-51), High Point (70-64) and Coppin State (67-59) on the road. For his head coaching career, Pirates coach Edward Joyner Jr. is 10-12 on the road.
