PIRATES FALL SHORT AGAINST RATTLERS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Hampton University men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Monday night, as the Pirates fell 62-58 to Florida A&M at the Lawson Center.

Junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to pull Hampton within three, 58-55, before hitting a free throw with 15 seconds left to cut the score to 60-58. Yannick Crowder and Amin Stevens each hit a free throw down the stretch, and junior guard Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) missed what would've been a game-tying 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 19 points on 8-for-16 shooting, while Morgan added 17 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) scored 11 points.

Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Hampton opened the game on a 15-8 run, before FAMU responded with four unanswered to cut the score to 15-12 at the 7:09 mark on a Rasheem Jenkins 3-pointer. A Pellum 3-pointer with 4:58 left in the half put Hampton (15-5, 5-2 MEAC) back up by seven, 21-14, before the Rattlers scored seven unanswered to tie the game at 21-21 on an Avery Moore trey at the 3:22 mark.

Hampton went into the half up 24-21.

The Pirates led by as many as eight in the second half, going up 39-31 with 11:18 to play on a Morgan layup. But the Rattlers went on an 18-10 run to tie the game at 49-49 with 5:04 to play when Brandon Hosley sank a 3-pointer.

Stevens sank a layup with 4:46 to play to give FAMU its first lead of the game, 51-49. The Pirates went 3-for-8 from the floor in the final 4:46, while going 1-for-5 from the free throw line.

The Pirates shot 32.3 percent (20-for-62) from the floor – just 26.3 percent (9-for-34) in the first half – and went 11-for-21 from the free throw line. The Pirates did force FAMU into 14 turnovers, converting them into 11 points.

Florida A&M shot 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the floor, while also making 19 of their 25 free throws. The Rattlers also held a 45-41 rebounding edge and outscored Hampton 26-3 off the bench.

Stevens led the Rattlers (7-12, 2-5 MEAC) led the way with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
