PIRATES LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST HORNETS

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will come home looking to get back into the win column on Saturday, when the Pirates take on Delaware State at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m.

The Pirates (15-5, 5-2 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., had their three-game winning streak snapped on Monday, as they fell 62-58 to Florida A&M at the Lawson Center. Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 19 points, while junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 17 points and senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) poured in 11 points. Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Delaware State (8-10, 4-2 MEAC) had its two-game winning streak snapped on Monday with a 65-63 loss to Coppin State at Memorial Hall. Freshman guard Desi Washington led three Hornets in double figures with 19 points, while freshman guard Casey Walker added 13 points and sophomore forward Marques Oliver poured in 11 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds.

Hampton is 15-13 against Delaware State since moving up to Division I in 1995. The two teams split last year's meetings; Delaware State won 58-56 in Memorial Hall, before the Pirates took a 64-45 win at the HU Convocation Center. The Hornets have won 12 of the last 16 meetings dating back to the 2002-03 season; prior to that, Hampton had won 11 straight over the Hornets. Hampton is 8-5 against Delaware State at the HU Convocation Center.

The Hornets went 17-12 last season, finishing second in the MEAC with an 11-5 mark before falling to South Carolina State in the MEAC Tournament. Delaware State returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad, and has been picked to finish fifth in the MEAC this season.

Washington leads three Hornets in double figures in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game, while Walker is pouring in 11.9 points per contest. Oliver, on top of pulling down a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game, is averaging 11.0 points a night.

The Hornets are averaging 62.2 points per game on offense, while giving up 62.9 points a night.

The Pirates are 5-1 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season following an 82-77 win over North Carolina A&T on Jan. 17. Hampton has also beaten Georgia State 60-56, before falling to Delaware 55-53, beating Towson 78-67, beating Liberty 62-59 and beating Norfolk State 63-56 at home so far this season. The Pirates went 6-6 at home last season, winning their last three games at the Convocation Center.

Following Saturday's contest, the Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Monday to take on Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
