LADY PIRATES TO TAKE ON WAKE FOREST

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will close out non-conference play on Thursday, when they head to the Lawrence Joel Coliseum to take on Wake Forest at 7 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (8-4), in their second season under head coach David Six, have won seven straight after winning the Georgia State Invitational on Thursday, Dec. 30 with a 74-44 win over Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds, earning Tournament MVP honors. Junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) and junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) each added 13 points.

Perry is eight points shy of becoming the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points.

Wake Forest (8-7) got back into the win column Monday night with a 66-49 home win over Southern Methodist. Senior forward Brittany Waters scored a team-high 22 points, while sophomore guard Lakevia Boykin and sophomore center Sandra Garcia each added 13 points.

Hampton is 0-2 all-time against Wake Forest. The two teams first met in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Nov. 24, 2003, when the Demon Deacons beat Hampton 64-43. Wake Forest visited the Lady Pirates on Nov. 19, 2004, taking an 82-75 overtime win.

The Demon Deacons were picked to finish ninth in the ACC this season, as coach Mike Petersen returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from a team that went 18-14 and finished tied for fifth in the conference. Wake Forest advanced to postseason play for the second straight season, losing to North Carolina A&T in the first round of the WNIT.

Waters is the only Wake Forest player averaging in double figures in scoring this season, pouring in 12.9 points per game to go along with 4.9 rebounds a contest – the second-best mark on the team. Garcia, who is second on the team in scoring with 9.9 points per game, leads the team in rebounding with 5.8 boards a night.

Wake Forest is averaging 70.9 points per game on offense, while giving up just 60.9 points a night.

So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 4-2 on the road, having defeated James Madison 69-64 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT before falling 76-64 at South Dakota State and 64-57 at Charlotte. Hampton has also defeated Radford 52-51, East Carolina 69-63 and Georgia State 74-44 on the road. Six is 10-9 on the road for his career as a head coach.

The Lady Pirates are 1-10 all-time against teams from the ACC. Hampton is 0-4 all-time against Duke, including last season's meeting in the first round of the NCAA Tournament; 1-1 against Maryland; 0-1 against North Carolina; 0-2 against Virginia and 0-2 against Wake Forest.
