SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Hampton University football team will make its final road trip of the season on Saturday, as the Pirates head to Theo Wright Stadium to take on MEAC newcomer Savannah State at 2 p.m.
The Pirates (4-3, 2-2 MEAC) beat North Carolina Central 30-27 in overtime this past Saturday, recording their first Homecoming win since 2006, while the Tigers (1-6, 1-3 MEAC) lost their third straight contest this past Saturday, falling 47-7 to Florida A&M.
For the season, senior quarterback
David Legree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is completing 61.6 percent of his passes (141-for-229) for 1,636 yards and 10 touchdowns. Legree, who threw for 298 yards and a touchdown against North Carolina Central, leads the MEAC in passing, averaging 233.7 yards per game.
Freshman quarterback
Travis Champion (Moreno Valley, Calif.) went 5-for-5 in relief this past Saturday against North Carolina Central, throwing for 47 yards and leading a pair of scoring drives – one of which included a two-point conversion in which Champion connected with sophomore running back
Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.).
Chisholm is averaging 3.9 yards per carry, and is currently third in the MEAC in rushing with an average of 70.3 rushing yards per game.
Senior wide receiver
Dyrri McCain (Norfolk, Va.) is having by far the best season of his Hampton career; through seven games, McCain has caught 32 passes – second-most on the team – for a team-high 495 yards and four touchdowns. He is averaging a team-best 15.5 yards per catch, and McCain's 70.7 receiving yards per game are good enough for fourth-best in the MEAC.
McCain has two 100-yard receiving games this season: a six-catch, 123-yard effort against Princeton and a career-high 143 yards on eight catches this past Saturday against North Carolina Central.
Hampton, guided by first-year offensive coordinator Willie Snead III, is third in the MEAC in total offense (391.0 yards per game) and fourth in scoring offense (28.4 points per game) so far this season. The Pirates have scored at least 30 points three times this season, including Saturday's 30-27 overtime win over North Carolina Central.
Sophomore linebacker
Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is currently third in the MEAC in tackles with 72, averaging 10.3 per game, while junior linebacker
Lyndell Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va.), a Virginia Tech transfer, is seventh in the conference with 67 tackles, an average of 9.6 per game. Junior defensive back
Justin Blake (Piscataway, N.J.) is eighth in the MEAC with 63 tackles, 9.0 per contest.
Senior defensive back
Micah Pellerin (New Orleans, La.) is third in the MEAC in passes defended, thanks to 10 pass breakups and two interceptions on the season. Junior defensive back
Destin Route (Atlanta, Ga.) is tied for fifth in passes defended with six pass breakups and one interception on the season.
The Pirates are 3-0 all-time against Savannah State, though the two teams have not met since 2005 – when the Pirates won 44-6 at Armstrong Stadium. The two teams first met in 2003, with Hampton winning 48-13 at Armstrong Stadium. The only other time Hampton traveled to Savannah, Ga. was in 2004 – and the Pirates won that contest 58-7. Hampton is averaging 50 points a game all-time against the Tigers.
The Pirates are 188-158-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the MEAC following a 23-17 win over Florida A&M on Sept. 8, a 35-31 loss at Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 22, 34-24 loss at Norfolk State and a 30-27 overtime win over North Carolina Central this past Saturday. Hampton is 9-8 against Bethune-Cookman; 23-13 against Delaware State; 8-12 against Florida A&M; 47-39-1 against Howard; 22-35-2 against Morgan State; 23-25-1 against Norfolk State; 25-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 17-5 against MEAC newcomer North Carolina Central; 3-0 against MEAC newcomer Savannah State; and 11-6 against South Carolina State.
This is only the Pirates' 16th year as a member of the MEAC, as they initially became a member back in 1995. Since joining the MEAC, the Pirates have won the conference championship five times, including three straight in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
