PIRATES’ WINNING STREAK HALTED AT FOUR

The Hampton University men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped at Corbett Sports Center on Monday night, as the Pirates fell 74-63 to North Carolina A&T.

The Pirates (19-6, 9-3 MEAC) are now tied for the MEAC lead with Bethune-Cookman.

Junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) led the Pirates with 27 points on 10-for-21 shooting, including a 7-for-12 mark from behind the arc. Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) added 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points.

Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) blocked six shots.

Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 9:50 left in the game to put the Pirates up 50-47, but the Aggies went on a 10-0 run to take a 57-50 lead at the 5:02 mark on a Thomas Coleman free throw. Adrian Powell and Jeremy Underwood hit back-to-back 3-pointers to go up 66-53 with 2:11 to play, capping what ultimately became a 19-3 run.

The Aggies would go on to lead by as many as 14, 73-59, with 54 seconds to play after a dunk from Coleman. North Carolina A&T also went 5-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:07.

The Pirates made just three field goals after Morgan's go-ahead trey.

Hampton shot 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the floor, making eight of its 24 3-pointers and 11 of its 16 free throws.

The Aggies (12-14, 7-5 MEAC) shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the floor and out-rebounded the Pirates 45-35. North Carolina A&T also out-scored Hampton 32-4 off the bench. Underwood led the way with 16 points off the bench, while Coleman added 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Powell scored 13 points.

The first half saw three ties and 10 lead changes, with North Carolina A&T taking a 39-34 lead into the half. The Aggies led by as many as eight, 30-22, with 8:37 left in the first half when Underwood sank a pair of free throws to cap a 10-4 run.

The Pirates went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 32-32 with 4:32 left in the half on two Pellum free throws, but North Carolina A&T ended the half on a 7-2 run.

The Aggies shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) in the first half to 43.3 percent shooting (13-for-30) for the Pirates. Pellum and Morgan each had 12 points in the first half, with Funches adding 10.

Underwood led North Carolina A&T with nine points at the half.

The Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday for a 6 p.m. game against Bethune-Cookman for first place in the MEAC.
