PIRATES FALL TO WILDCATS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team fell 78-76 in double overtime to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (19-7, 9-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and fall a game behind Bethune-Cookman in the conference standings.

C.J. Reed hit a floater as time expired to give the Wildcats (16-11, 10-3 MEAC) the win, after the Pirates fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76-76 on a layup from junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period.

Reed, who hit all three of his 3-pointers in the overtime periods, sank a floater with 1:50 left in the second overtime to cap a 6-0 B-CU run and give the Wildcats a 76-70 lead.

Reed also hit a trey with four seconds left in the first overtime to force another five minutes.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 22 points on 7-for-18 shooting, while Morgan added 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) and senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) each added 14 points; Funches added a team-high 12 rebounds.

Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) blocked seven shots and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Pirates shot 35.7 percent (25-for-70) from the floor, making just four of 21 3-pointers and 22 of 35 free throws. The Pirates did force B-CU into 17 turnovers.

The Wildcats shot 42.6 percent (31-for-73) from the floor and out-rebounded the Pirates 51-44. Reed led all scorers with 31 points, while Garrius Holloman added 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Alexander Starling scored 10 points.

B-CU opened the second half on a 14-3 run to take a 42-31 lead with 15:09 left after Holloman sank a layup. Morgan sank a layup at the 7:23 mark to put the Pirates up 50-49.

The Pirates led twice more in the second half: 56-54 with 5:28 left on a Tunnell jumper and 58-56 with 4:51 to play on a Pellum floater.

After Hampton went up 4-0 to open the game, the Wildcats responded with a 14-4 run to take a 14-8 lead at the 12:23 mark of the first half on a Starling layup. The Pirates then responded with a 12-4 run, taking a 20-18 lead on a Pellum jumper with 6:11 left in the half.

B-CU then scored seven unanswered, taking a 25-20 lead with 3:03 left in the half after Kevin Dukes drained a 3-pointer.

The game was tied 28-28 at the half after Pellum hit a fadeaway jumper with 22 seconds left on the clock. Pellum had a game-high 13 points at the half, going 5-for-10 from the floor and making two of his four 3-pointers.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they take on Florida A&M at the HU Convocation Center at 8 p.m. It will be Hampton's home finale, as well as Senior Night.
