SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split its doubleheader with George Washington on Tuesday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, winning the second game 4-3 after losing the first game 5-4 in eight innings.

With the win, Hampton snapped a 10-game losing streak.

After the Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game on an RBI single from Autumn Taylor, the Lady Pirates (5-13) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored the first run on a throwing error, before junior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) drove in the second run with a groundout to give Hampton a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. After the bases were loaded following two walks and a single, sophomore Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) was hit by a pitch to drive in sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.).

Sophomore Cynammon Bell (Lithonia, Ga.) later walked with the bases loaded to drive in another run to put Hampton up 4-1.

George Washington scored a run in the top of the sixth inning when Lacey Cook reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to cut Hampton's lead to 4-2. Taylor singled in another run in the top of the seventh, but junior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) struck out Jillian Stanley to end the game.

Magett went 2-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) went 2-for-2 and drew a walk. Byrd picked up her first save of the season, pitching the last 1 1/3 innings and striking out two.

The Lady Pirates struck first in the first game of the doubleheader, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Bell drove in the first run with a single to right field, before Ferguson drove in two more runs with a double to left-center field.

The Colonials answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3, starting when Lauren Wilson scored on a throwing error. Katie Terrazas then scored on a wild pitch, before Tara Fogarty scored the third run on a Kara Clauss sacrifice fly to right field.

Wilson scored again in the sixth inning on a fielding error to put George Washington up 4-3, before the Lady Pirates tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a double down the left-field line by Magett.

Wilson scored the deciding run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on March 18-20, when they travel to College Park, Md. to compete in the University of Maryland Round Robin Tournament.
