SOFTBALL SWEPT IN DOUBLEHEADER BY CAMPBELL

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Campbell University on Wednesday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, dropping the first game 12-0 in five innings before losing the second game 16-1 in five innings.

The Lady Pirates (9-23) hung tough with the Fightin' Camels in the first game, holding Campbell to just two runs in the first two innings. Campbell struck in the third inning with three runs on a three-run home run to center field by Sarah Ling to put the Camels up 5-0.

Campbell (23-18) would then add seven runs in the fifth inning, including a run on a bases-loaded walk and three runs scored on hit batters. Ling, Katie Hinton and Keeli Michael each had RBI singles in the inning for the Camels.

Lauren Stephan went the full five innings for Campbell, scattering four hits and striking out three.

The Lady Pirates got one hit each from sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.), senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and sophomore Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.).

Campbell burst out of the gate to start the second game, putting up 10 runs in the first inning. Ling delivered the inning's big blow with a three-run home run to left center field, before Stephan followed with a solo shot to center.

The Camels added three runs in the second inning, thanks in large part to a two-run double from Amanda Miller, and three more in the top of the fourth.

The Lady Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, when sophomore Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) grounded out to second base with the bases loaded to drive in junior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.).

Hampton recorded six hits in the second game – one each from Vickers, Brown, Byrd, Scott, junior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and sophomore Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.).

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they take on Morgan State at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The two teams will also play a game on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
