BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team closed out the regular season by losing three games to Coppin State on Friday and Saturday at Coppin State Field.
The Lady Pirates finished the regular season 13-35 overall and 6-9 in the MEAC Northern Division.
Coppin State won Friday's game 12-2 in five innings, before sweeping Saturday's doubleheader; the Lady Eagles took the first game 5-2 before winning the second game 7-5.
The Lady Pirates struck first in the first inning of Friday's game, when junior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) singled home a run, before sophomore Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) drove in another run with a triple to left-center field.
Jade Dudley homered to lead off the second inning to put Coppin State on the board, before the Lady Eagles added six runs in the third inning – taking advantage, in part, of two errors. Dudley added an RBI single in the inning, and Heather Josker singled home two more runs.
Coppin State added five more runs in the fourth inning, thanks in large part to a two-run single by Dudley and a two-run single from Charma Robinson.
Magett led the Lady Pirates at the plate on Friday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Coppin State scored first in the second inning of Saturday's first game on an RBI groundout from Tiffani Whaley, before adding two runs in the third inning on a two-run home run to left field by Amber Miller.
After the Lady Eagles added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead, Hampton pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) drove in the first run with a groundout to first base, before senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) doubled home another run.
Brown, junior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate in Saturday's first game.
Hampton had a 3-0 lead after three innings in Saturday's second game, thanks to an RBI double from Estep in the first inning and a two-run double by Scott in the third. The Lady Pirates then scored another run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI triple from junior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.).
Coppin State scored three times in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Whaley, an RBI groundout from Erica Washington and Carmen Frazier reaching on an error.
The Lady Pirates answered with a run in the fifth inning, taking a 5-3 lead on an RBI single from Scott, before Coppin State tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning. Paige Arnold tripled in the first run, before Robinson grounded out to drive home the second run.
The Lady Eagles scored twice more in the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead on a two-run double by Robinson.
Brown and senior Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Brown scored twice. Scott went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
