PIRATES TO SQUARE OFF AGAINST MORGAN STATE ON ESPNU

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to bounce back on Monday, taking on Morgan State at the Talmadge Hill Field House at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

The Pirates (6-11, 2-2 MEAC), in their third season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., lost their second straight game on Saturday, falling 83-66 on the road to Coppin State. Senior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the way with 26 points, while senior guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) added a career-high 25 points and senior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.)pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Bears (3-11, 1-2 MEAC) fell in two overtimes to Norfolk State 90-89 on Saturday, despite 33 points from junior forward DeWayne Jackson. Redshirt-sophomore center Ian Chiles and senior guard/forward Aric Brooks each added 12 points for the Bears, while senior forward Kevin Thompson added 11 points.

The Bears went 17-14 overall last season, finishing fourth in the MEAC with a 10-6 record before falling to Hampton in the MEAC Tournament championship game. Morgan State, under sixth-year head coach Todd Bozeman, return all five starters and 10 letterwinners from last season, and the Bears were picked to win the MEAC this season.

Thompson leads the Bears in scoring with 13.6 points per game, while also pulling down a team-high 8.2 rebounds per contest. Jackson is second on the team in scoring, pouring in 11.7 points per contest.

The Bears are scoring just 63.2 points per game.

Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 20-10 against Morgan State, beating the Bears 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament championship game last season after losing three straight in the series. Hampton and Morgan State first met on Jan. 5, 1997, with the Pirates winning 61-59. From 1999-2003, the Pirates won nine straight over the Bears, and the Pirates are 7-5 against Morgan State in Baltimore, Md.

Hampton is 193-111 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. North Carolina Central, in its first year in the MEAC, is the only team currently in the conference that the Pirates have not faced since moving to Div. I.

The Pirates are 17-9 against Bethune-Cookman; 14-14 against Coppin State; 17-13 against Delaware State; 17-11 against Florida A&M; 29-5 against Howard; 20-6 against Maryland Eastern Shore; 20-10 against Morgan State; 19-14 against Norfolk State; 21-10 against North Carolina A&T; 2-1 against Savannah State and 17-17 against South Carolina State.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

The Pirates went 8-5 on the road last season, winning three of their last four regular-season road games in 2010-11 – including the last two at Delaware State (71-64) and at Howard (83-72). The Pirates dropped their 2011-12 road opener on Nov. 17, falling 72-51 at Richmond before losing 66-52 at Rutgers on Nov. 20 and 54-53 to Fordham on Dec. 5, 74-72 to American on Dec. 7, 74-65 at Liberty on Dec. 17, 64-54 to Robert Morris on Dec. 20, 74-67 to James Madison on Monday and 83-66 to Coppin State on Saturday.

For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 14-21 on the road – 0-8 this season.
