RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take on the Spiders of the University of Richmond on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center as part of the Nations of Coaches Classic.
The Pirates (0-1), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., dropped their season opener this past Friday, a 69-51 defeat at William & Mary. Freshman guard
Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga. ) and junior
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y..) led the Pirates with 10 points each, while Maxwell also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
The Spiders (2-0) opened their portion of the Nations of Coaches Classic schedule on Tuesday with a 101-58 win over UNC Wilmington at the Robins Center. Richmond also opened its season this past Friday with an 84-42 win over Liberty.
The Spiders were 16-16 overall last season, finishing tied for ninth in the A-10 with a conference mark of 7-9. In returning three starters and eight letterwinners from 2011-12, the Spiders were picked to finish 10th in the conference this season, their eighth under head coach Chris Mooney.
Four Spiders are in double figures in scoring so far this season, led by senior guard Darien Brothers with 20.0 points a contest. Sophomore guard Kendall Anthony is averaging 14.0 points per game, while junior forward Derrick Williams is pouring in 11.5 points a night to go along with a team-high 8.0 rebounds a contest. Sophomore guard Wayne Sparrow is averaging 11.0 points a game.
The Spiders are averaging 92.5 points a game on offense, while giving up just 50.0 points a night.
Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 1-3 against Richmond, including a 72-51 loss at the Robins Center last season as part of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge. Hampton and Richmond first met on Nov. 27, 2002, when the Pirates beat the Spiders 61-60 at the Convocation Center.
Richmond has won each of the last three meetings, both at the Robins Center – including winning 73-42 on Dec. 29, 2003 and 44-40 on Nov. 18, 2005.
Hampton is 9-14 all-time against teams currently in the A-10 – including an 0-2 mark last season, when the Pirates fell to Richmond 72-51 and Fordham 54-53. Hampton is 0-1 against Dayton; 1-0 against Duquesne; 2-1 against Fordham; 1-1 against George Washington; 1-1 against La Salle; 1-3 against Richmond; 2-0 against St. Bonaventure; and 1-7 against Virginia Commonwealth. The Pirates have not faced Butler, Charlotte, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, St. Joseph's, St. Louis, Temple, or Xavier.
The Pirates went 1-13 on the road last season, with that lone win coming at Florida A&M, 74-59, on Feb. 25. For his career, head coach Ed Joyner is 15-27 on the road after Hampton's season-opening loss at William & Mary this past Friday.
