PIRATES HIT THE ROAD TO TAKE ON RADFORD

RADFORD, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will hit the road yet again on Wednesday, traveling to take on the Highlanders of Radford University at 7 p.m. at the Dedmon Center Arena.

This will be the last of six straight games away from home for the Pirates to open the 2012-13 season.

The Pirates (0-5), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., are in search of their first win of the season after falling 61-60 at UNC Wilmington to wrap up the Nations of Coaches Classic on Sunday, despite 13 points from junior forward David Bruce (Linden, N.J.).

Junior Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y..) and freshman guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) each added 11 points in the loss, while redshirt-freshman guard Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) had a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Highlanders (4-3) have won two straight after Saturday's 74-61 win at The Citadel. Freshman guard Ya Ya Anderson led four Radford players in double figures with 13 points, while senior guard Blake Smith added 12 points.

The Highlanders were 6-26 overall last season, finishing with a conference mark of 2-16. Radford was picked to finish fifth in the Northern Division of the Big South this season, their second under head coach Mike Jones.

Sophomore guard Javonte Green leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game to go along with a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard R.J. Price is averaging 13.5 points per game as the only other Highlander in double figures.

The Highlanders are averaging 72.4 points a game on offense, while giving up just 68.6 points a night.

Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 2-2 against Radford. Hampton has won each of the last two meetings – including a 73-69 win at the HU Convocation Center during the 2005-06 season, the last time these two teams met. Hampton played at Radford once, in the 2000-01 season, falling 74-70.

Hampton is 13-26 all-time against teams currently in the Big South. Hampton is 0-1 against Campbell; 1-0 against Charleston Southern; 1-1 against Coastal Carolina; 2-0 against High Point; 2-2 against Liberty; 3-1 against Longwood; 2-2 against Radford; and 1-1 against Winthrop. The Pirates have never faced Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, or VMI.

The Pirates went 1-13 on the road last season, with that lone win coming at Florida A&M, 74-59, on Feb. 25. For his career, head coach Ed Joyner is 15-30 on the road after Hampton's season-opening loss at William & Mary, a 68-58 loss at Richmond, a 75-67 loss at Ohio, and a 61-60 loss at UNC Wilmington.
