HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Wednesday, looking to bounce back into the win column against Maryland Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.

The Pirates (8-16, 4-7 MEAC), in their third season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., fell on the road to Norfolk State 70-62 on Saturday night, keeping them winless on the road so far this season. The Hawks (6-18, 3-8 MEAC) fell 81-78 Monday night at Coppin State, despite 17 points each from redshirt-senior guard Hillary Haley, sophomore guard Louis Bell and junior guard Percy Woods. Senior forward/center Tyler Hines added 14 points and a team-high 17 rebounds.

The Hawks went 9-22 last season, finishing 10th in the MEAC with a mark of 5-12 in the conference before falling to Hampton in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. UMES, in its fourth season under head coach Frankie Allen, returns three starters and four letterwinners from last season, and the Hawks were picked to finish 12th in the MEAC this season.

Woods leads the Hawks in scoring with 11.1 points per game, while Haley is the only other UMES player in double figures with 10.2 points per contest. Sophomore center Ronald Spencer is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.5 boards per contest.

UMES is scoring just 60.7 points per game, while giving up 71.7 points a night.

Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 20-6 against Maryland Eastern Shore, having won the last four meetings between the two teams – as well as 17 of the last 18. The Pirates beat the Hawks twice last season, including a 77-55 win in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. UMES last beat Hampton on Feb. 11, 2008, taking a 68-62 win in Princess Anne, Md.

Hampton is 11-2 against the Hawks at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton is 195-116 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. North Carolina Central, in its first year in the MEAC, is the only team currently in the conference that the Pirates have not faced since moving to Div. I.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

The Pirates went 8-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, despite losing their last two home games of the season. Starting with a 78-67 win over Towson on Dec. 20 of last season, the Pirates won seven straight home games – including five in a row against MEAC competition.

For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 19-11 at home, and the Pirates are 5-3 at home so far this season – beating William & Mary, High Point, Howard, South Carolina State and Morgan State, while losing to Savannah State on Dec. 1, Norfolk State on Jan. 21 and Coppin State on Jan. 28.
