NEWARK, Del. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take on the University of Delaware as part of the 2012 Sears ESPN BracketBusters on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Pirates (9-16), in their third season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., got back into the win column in a big way Wednesday night with an 82-62 win over Maryland Eastern Shore at the HU Convocation Center. Senior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the way with 33 points, while senior guard
Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) added 13 points and senior forward
Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) added 10 points.
The Blue Hens (14-12) picked up their fifth straight win on Tuesday with a 71-57 victory at Hofstra. Freshman guard Jarvis Threatt led Delaware with 20 points, while junior forward Jamelle Hagins added 14 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman guards Khalid Lewis and Kyle Anderson each added 12 points for the Blue Hens.
The Blue Hens went 14-17 last season, finishing seventh in the CAA with a mark of 8-10 in the conference before falling to Old Dominion in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament. Delaware, in its sixth season under head coach Monte' Ross, returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last season, and the Hawks were picked to finish seventh in the CAA this season.
Sophomore guard Devon Saddler is the team's leading scorer, pouring in 18.3 points per game, while Hagins is second on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per contest, while also pulling down a team-high 11.1 rebounds per game.
The Blue Hens are scoring 68.3 points per game, while giving up 67.5 points a night.
Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 1-3 against the Blue Hens. Hampton's only win over Delaware came on Nov. 27, 2007, when the Pirates won 51-50 in Newark, Del. The two teams have met in each of the last five seasons, and Delaware won last year's meeting 55-53 at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates are 1-1 against the Blue Hens on the road.
Hampton is 14-32 all-time against teams currently in the CAA – including a 2-1 mark last season, in which the Pirates defeated Georgia State (60-56 in overtime) and Towson (78-67), while losing to Delaware 55-53. The Pirates opened the 2011-12 season on Nov. 12 with a 71-53 home win over William & Mary, before falling 74-67 at James Madison on Jan. 9.
The Pirates are 1-3 against Delaware; 2-0 against Georgia State; 1-4 against George Mason; 0-3 against James Madison; 2-5 against Old Dominion; 1-2 against Towson; 1-7 against Virginia Commonwealth; and 6-9 against William & Mary.
Hampton has never faced Drexel, Hofstra, Northeastern or UNC Wilmington.
The Pirates dropped their 2011-12 road opener on Nov. 17, falling 72-51 at Richmond before losing 66-52 at Rutgers on Nov. 20 and 54-53 to Fordham on Dec. 5, 74-72 to American on Dec. 7, 74-65 at Liberty on Dec. 17, 64-54 to Robert Morris on Dec. 20, 74-67 to James Madison on Jan. 9, 83-66 to Coppin State on Jan. 14, 68-56 at Morgan State on Jan. 16, 77-69 at Delaware State on Feb. 6 and 70-62 at Norfolk State on Feb. 11.
The Pirates went 8-5 on the road last season, winning three of their last four regular-season road games in 2010-11 – including the last two at Delaware State (71-64) and at Howard (83-72). For his career as a head coach, Ed Joyner is 14-24 on the road – 0-11 this season.
