HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against rival Howard on Saturday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, winning the first game 9-2 before taking the second game in walk-off fashion, 5-4 in eight innings.
The Lady Pirates (16-24, 4-4 MEAC) have won three straight games.
Howard led the second game 4-0 after five and a half innings, thanks to two runs each in the third and fifth innings, but the Lady Pirates' comeback began in the bottom of the sixth with three runs. Junior
Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) got things started with an RBI single, before junior
Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) brought in another run on a fielder's choice.
A sacrifice fly from junior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) cut Howard's lead to 4-3.
After senior
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) set the Lady Bison down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, the Lady Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the frame and forced extras after junior
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) doubled to right-center field to score senior

Sophomore
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) led off the eighth inning with a double down the right field line, before advancing to third on a Huwe groundout. Scott then singled to right-center field to score Wilkins and give Hampton the doubleheader sweep.
Byrd struck out seven in eight innings of work, picking up her seventh win of the season.
Trimble, Saunders and junior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Lady Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, thanks to an RBI single from freshman
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va).
Hampton then pushed across five runs in the bottom of the third inning; Saunders got the scoring underway with an RBI double to left-center field, before Jackson doubled to the left field wall with the bases loaded, scoring all three runners.
Jackson then scored on a passed ball to put Hampton up 6-0.
The Lady Bison (7-28, 4-4 MEAC) scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to cut Hampton's lead to 6-2, but the Lady Pirates scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Trimble brought home a pair of runs with a single to right, before Wilkins doubled to left-center to bring in another run.
Jackson struck out five and gave up just two runs in seven innings of work, picking up her ninth win of the season and recording her 16th complete game.
She also went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in four runs.
