HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team finished its three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, taking an 11-0 win in five innings.
The Lady Pirates (20-26, 8-4 MEAC) have won seven of their last 10 games.
Hampton scored at least once in each of its four trips to the plate on Tuesday, starting with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After senior
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led off the inning with a triple, freshman
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) drove her in with a single up the middle.
Later in the inning, sophomore
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) singled in Vallejo to put the Lady Pirates up 2-0.
The Lady Pirates tacked on another run in the bottom of the second, going up 3-0 after senior
Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) doubled to left field to bring home junior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) to put Hampton up 3-0.
Most of Hampton's damage came in the bottom of the third, as the Lady Pirates pushed across five runs. Junior
Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) brought in three of those runs, clocking her fourth home run of the season down the left-field line.
Scott followed that with an RBI double, before Boykin drove her in with a triple to right field to put Hampton up 8-0.
Wilkins singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before junior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.), in a pinch-hitting role, smacked her first home run of the season over the right-center field wall – bringing home Wilkins and giving Hampton an 11-0 lead.
Senior
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) gave up just two hits in five innings of work, picking up her 10th win of the season. She struck out four in the winning effort, and Byrd is now 4-2 on the mound in conference play this season.
Trimble, Boykin, Wilkins and Vallejo each had two hits for the Lady Pirates, who recorded 12 hits on the afternoon. Trimble led the way with four RBIs, while Wilkins, Ferguson and Boykin each drove in two runs.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for a doubleheader against Coppin State starting at 2 p.m. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
