VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO ON FIRST DAY OF STETSON TOURNEY

The Hampton University volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Friday in the Stetson Clarion Classic held at the Glenn Wilkes Court in the Edmunds Center.

Central Arkansas beat the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19), before Wofford beat Hampton in the evening match 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-15).

The Lady Pirates (2-5) led 7-5 in the first set against Central Arkansas following a kill from sophomore Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia), before the Bears tied the set at 8-8. Maksimovic recorded another kill later in the set to put Hampton up 12-11, but when Central Arkansas took a 14-13 lead, the Bears never relinquished that lead.

The Bears hit a match-best .395 in the first set.

Senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Maksimovic teamed on a block early in the second set to tie the score at 3-3, but the Bears scored the next three points to go up 6-3. Sophomore Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) closed the gap to 8-5 with a kill, but Central Arkansas scored the next three points to go up 11-5.

Baylor and Maksimovic teamed on another block later in the set to cut the lead to 18-13, but Central Arkansas closed the set with a 7-0 run to go up 2-0 in the match.

Baylor and junior Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) blocked a Central Arkansas attack early in the third set to cut the Bears' lead to 4-3, before the Lady Pirates tied the set at 5-5. The two teams were tied several times in the set, including at 18-18 after a service ace from freshman Allysa Medina (Menifee, Calif.).

Central Arkansas (5-0) closed on a 7-1 run to close the match.

Sophomore Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) led Hampton with eight kills and nine digs on defense, while Kalfinova had a team-best .364 hitting percentage with four kills and no errors in 11 attacks. Medina added eight digs.

Junior Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) had 20 of Hampton's 23 assists.

The Lady Pirates bounced back in the first set of their match against Wofford, going up 15-10 after a service ace from Kocevska. The Terriers battled back to take a 20-18 lead, before later going up 22-20. In fact, Wofford led 23-21, but Hampton responded with four straight points – a Maksimovic kill, a block from Kocevska and Fonseca, a block from Kraskura and Kocevska, and another Maksimovic kill – to clinch the set.

Wofford (3-2) waged a back-and-forth battle with Hampton in the second set, though the Lady Pirates led 16-14 after Maksimovic tipped in a kill. From there, the Terriers went on a 12-4 run to take the second set and tie the match at 1-1.

The Terriers hit a match-best .333 in the second set.

Hampton jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the third set, before Wofford battled back to take a 6-4 lead. The Lady Pirates them tied the set on three occasions, lastly at 8-8, before the Terriers scored three straight to go up 11-8.

Hampton responded with a 7-1 run, giving the Lady Pirates a 15-12 lead. The set went back-and-forth as the teams exchanged points, before Wofford took a 20-17 lead. Kraskura tied the set at 21-21 with a kill, but Wofford held on to take the set and a 2-1 lead.

Wofford stormed out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set, taking control and seeing that lead eventually balloon to 15-8. Kocevska cut that lead to 15-9 with a service ace, but the Terriers took back control, going up 21-13.

Maksimovic led the way with a career-high 18 kills to go along with 14 digs on defense for her third double-double of the season. Kraskura added nine kills and 16 digs. Medina also had 16 digs to tie for the team lead.

Fonseca had 36 of Hampton's 39 assists.
