PIRATES SET TO PLAY HOST TO DELAWARE

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will return home on Sunday to square off against the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware at the HU Convocation Center at 2 p.m.

The Pirates (2-0) overcame a late five-point deficit and cold shooting to beat Saint Peter's 64-59 on Tuesday in their 2013-14 road debut. Senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds and leading the team with five blocked shots.

Redshirt-freshman guard Lawrence Cooks (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points in the win, going 3-for-5 from the floor and hitting all three of his 3-point attempts.

Sophomore guard Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) dished out a team-high four assists as the Pirates started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2002-03, when Hampton opened with a 4-0 mark.

The Blue Hens, in their eighth season under head coach Monte' Ross, return three starters and five letterwinners, and welcome four newcomers, to a squad that went 19-14 overall last season and 13-5 in the CAA. Delaware was picked to finish fourth in the CAA this season, and senior guard Devon Saddler was a Preseason First Team All-CAA selection.

Junior guard Jarvis Threatt was named Preseason Second Team All-CAA.

Saddler led the CAA in scoring last season, averaging 19.9 points per game en route to First Team All-CAA honors, while Threat was named Third Team All-CAA last year after averaging 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

The Blue Hens have opened their season with back-to-back losses after dropping their home opener 95-93 to Charleston Southern on Tuesday, despite four players in double figures – including 30 points from senior guard Davon Usher and 29 points from Saddler.

The Pirates are 1-4 against Delaware, having dropped each of the last four meetings between the two teams – including a 68-64 decision in Newark, Del. last season. This will be Delaware's third trip to the Convocation Center, where the Blue Hens are 2-0 all-time. Hampton's lone win in the series came in the 2007-08 season, when the Pirates won 51-50 in Newark, Del.

Hampton is 10-21 against teams currently in the CAA since joining the Div. I ranks in 1995. The Pirates are 0-1 against College of Charleston; 1-4 against Delaware; 1-3 against James Madison; 1-2 against Towson; 0-1 against UNC Wilmington; and 7-10 against William & Mary.

The Pirates have never faced Drexel, Hofstra, or Northeastern. The Pirates went 7-8 at the HU Convocation Center last season, even though they won three of their last five home contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 28-22 overall in the Convocation Center, and the Pirates won their home debut on Nov. 9, defeating William & Mary 77-69.
