PIRATES TO CLOSE OUT HOMESTAND AGAINST BETHUNE-COOKMAN

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will be back at the HU Convocation Center Monday evening in search of its third straight win, as the Pirates square off against Bethune-Cookman at 8 p.m.

The Pirates (4-5, 1-0 MEAC) picked up their second straight win Saturday night, defeating Florida A&M 72-62 for their first conference win of the season. Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led three Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while also dishing out a team-high four assists.

Senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior center Emmanuel Okoroba (Garland, Texas) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman (2-9, 0-1 MEAC) has lost seven straight games following Saturday's 59-45 loss at Norfolk State, and the Wildcats were picked to finish eighth in the MEAC this season. Heading into Saturday's loss at Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman had three players averaging in double figures scoring – led by redshirt-junior guard Mikel Trapp's 12.6 points per game.

Junior guard Ricky Johnson was averaging 11.0 points a night heading into Saturday, while freshman guard Clemmye Owens was averaging 10.3 points per game. Senior forward Daquan Brown was the team's top rebounder heading into the weekend, with 5.1 boards a contest.

Hampton is 18-11 against Bethune-Cookman since the Pirates moved up to Div. I and joined the MEAC in 1995. The Pirates defeated the Wildcats 75-66 last season, snapping Bethune-Cookman's three-game winning streak in the series. Prior to that streak, Hampton had won eight of nine meetings between the two teams.

Hampton is 8-5 against Bethune-Cookman at home.

Hampton is 211-125 all-time against schools currently in the MEAC since moving up to Div. I and joining the conference in 1995. The Pirates have won two MEAC regular-season titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

The Pirates went 7-8 at the HU Convocation Center last season, even though they won three of their last five home contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 29-23 overall in the Convocation Center, and the Pirates won their home debut on Nov. 9, defeating William & Mary 77-69, before falling 90-79 to Delaware on Nov. 17.
