PIRATES HEADING TO DELAWARE STATE FOR ROAD FINALE

The Hampton University men's basketball team will take on Delaware State on Monday at Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. in what will be the team's final road game of the 2012-13 regular season.

The Pirates (11-15, 8-4 MEAC), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., fell 66-59 to Saint Peter's on Saturday in their BracketBuster game. Junior guard/forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

Junior guard Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) and freshman guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) each added 11 points.

The Hornets (12-14, 7-5 MEAC) fell 60-56 to Norfolk State on Saturday, despite 13 points from sophomore forward Tyshawn Bell and 12 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Marques Oliver. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak.

The Hornets went 15-14 last season, finishing third in the MEAC with a mark of 12-4 before falling to Florida A&M in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. Delaware State is in its 13th season under head coach Greg Jackson, and the Hornets were picked to finish second in the MEAC this season.

Sophomore guard Tahj Tate leads Delaware State in scoring so far this season, averaging 12.9 points per game. He is the only Hornet in double figures so far this season. Oliver is pulling down a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game.

The Hornets are averaging just 60.4 points a game on offense, while giving up 63.5 points per contest.

Since moving up to the Div. I level in 1995, the Pirates are 18-15 against Delaware State – including an 85-84 double-overtime win on Feb. 11 at the HU Convocation Center. Before last season, Hampton won three straight and four of five over Delaware State.

The Pirates are 6-8 against Delaware State on the road.

Hampton is 207-123 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including a 6-10 mark in the conference last season. So far this season, Hampton is 8-4 in MEAC play and sits fourth in the conference. The Pirates have faced every team currently in the MEAC at least once, including newcomers North Carolina Central and Savannah State.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

The Pirates went 1-13 on the road last season, with that lone win coming at Florida A&M, 74-59, on Feb. 25. For his career, Joyner is 19-34 on the road after Hampton's season-opening loss at William & Mary, a 68-58 loss at Richmond, a 75-67 loss at Ohio, a 61-60 loss at UNC Wilmington, a 73-64 loss at Radford, a 50-43 loss at Winthrop, and a 68-49 loss at USC Upstate.

Hampton's first road win of the season came on Jan. 12 in a 51-49 win over Howard, but the Pirates fell at Norfolk State 74-67 on Jan. 26 before beating South Carolina State 64-60 on Jan. 30, beating Morgan State 64-62 at the buzzer on Feb. 2, beating Coppin State 59-53 on Feb. 4, upending Savannah State 71-68 in overtime on Feb. 7, and beating Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday.
