COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against the University of Maryland on Tuesday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium, falling 14-6 in six innings in the first game before dropping the second game 13-5 in six frames.

The Lady Pirates (11-14) have still won six of their last 11 games.

Hampton struck first in the top of the first inning in the first game, as freshman Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) doubled to center field, scoring freshman Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) and giving the Lady Pirates a 1-0 lead.

But Maryland answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run home run from Nikki Maier, to take a 4-1 lead.

The Terrapins led 8-1 after three innings, but the Lady Pirates cut into that gap with a four-run top of the fourth. It all started when sophomore Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) reaching on an error, which allowed senior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) to score.

Junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) then singled home two runs, before scoring on a throwing error to cut Maryland's lead to 8-5.

After Maryland added a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Pirates scored again; sophomore Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) doubled to right-center field, bringing home McCoy and cutting the Terrapins' lead to 9-6.

But Maryland scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in large part to a two-run triple from Lindsey Schmeiser, before adding two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

McCoy and Burruel each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game, while Wilkins drove in a team-high two runs.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out two in 5.1 innings of work.

Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the second game, thanks to a two-run home run to right-center field from Mandy Gardner, before the Lady Pirates tied the game in the top of the third.

McCoy got the scoring started with an RBI single down the left field line, bringing home Wilkins, before Huwe singled in the other run.

But the Terrapins answered in the bottom of the third with four runs, taking a 6-2 lead after an RBI triple from Schmeiser, a two-run home run from Shannon Bustillos, and an RBI groundout from Melissa Mancuso.

The Terrapins broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead, but the Lady Pirates answered in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, cutting Maryland's lead to 9-4 after a two-run single to center field from senior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.).

Vallejo drove in another run with an RBI groundout later in the inning to cut Maryland's lead to 9-5.

Two more Maryland runs in the bottom of the fifth gave the Terrapins (8-14) an 11-5 advantage, before Juli Strange ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Seven different Lady Pirates had a hit in the second game, and Scott drove in a team-high two runs.
