SOFTBALL WINS TWO AT UMBC SPRING CLASSIC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team won two games this past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Spring Classic, which was held at both UMBC and Coppin State.

The Lady Pirates (13-18) beat Princeton 5-4 in extra innings on Saturday and host UMBC 14-0 on Sunday, while also falling 6-5 to Princeton on Friday and 6-1 to Georgetown on Saturday.

Friday's game against Siena was cancelled.

Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead early on the Lady Pirates on Saturday, pushing across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. But Hampton scored three runs of its own in the top of the fourth, tying the game at 3-3.

Freshman Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) brought in two runs with a single, before sophomore Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) doubled down the left-field line to bring in the third run.

Neither team would score again until the top of the eighth inning, when junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) doubled to left-center field to bring in a run, giving the Lady Pirates a 4-3 lead, before freshman Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) put Hampton up 5-4 with an RBI groundout.

Princeton added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Lady Pirates held on for the win.

Wilkins and Taylor each went 2-for-4 at the plate on Saturday against Princeton, while Langlois drove in a team-high two runs.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went the full eight innings to pick up her ninth win of the season, striking out nine.

The Lady Pirates took a 1-0 lead over UMBC in the first inning on Sunday, after an RBI single from senior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.), before adding three more runs in the top of the third. Wilkins homered to left-center field, before Taylor added a long ball of her own to center field.

An RBI single from Burruel gave Hampton a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) added an inside-the-park home run of her own in the fourth inning to put the Lady Pirates up 5-0. But Hampton really broke the game open in the seventh inning, pushing across nine runs.

Senior Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) singled home a run, before a single from sophomore Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) scored two more runs. McCoy added her own RBI single, before freshman McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas) doubled home two runs.

Burruel added an RBI single, before Trimble singled two more runs to put Hampton up 14-0.

Taylor, Burruel, and Trimble each had three hits against UMBC, and Trimble had a team-high three RBIs.

Jackson went seven innings, giving up just three hits and striking out eight.

Taylor gave the Lady Pirates a quick 1-0 lead over Princeton on Friday with a home run in the top of the first, before Princeton tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame, before taking a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

An RBI single from McCoy in the top of the third tied the game at 2-2, before Princeton scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. The Lady Pirates answered in the top of the fifth, when Langlois singled home two runs to tie the game at 4-4.

Princeton took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Hampton tied the game in the top of the seventh when senior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) scored on a fielder's choice.

Princeton then won the game in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off home run.

McCoy went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Jackson struck out seven batters in 6.0 innings of work.

Georgetown took a quick 3-0 lead over the Lady Pirates on Saturday in the top of the first inning, and Hampton got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double down the left field line from Langlois to cut the lead to 3-1.

But the Hoyas added a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take the 6-1 win.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, when they open conference play against Morgan State in Baltimore, Md.
